Recipe for Liquid Stevia -- Big Money Saver

Liquid Stevia Recipe from Extract Powder

We save about $253 per year making our own liquid stevia instead of buying it on Amazon.com.   Our annual expense for liquid stevia is now only about $27 -- it was about $280.  We were paying $17.50 per 8 oz bottle on Amazon.com.

DESCRIPTION:
Makes 8 fl oz of liquid stevia drops.  I use Bulk Supplements Stevia Extract Powder.  It cost me around $44 including tax and shipping for 2 lbs -- enough for about 26 eight oz bottles of strong liquid stevia.

INGREDIENTS:
35 grams stevia powder extract
200 grams boiling distilled water

DIRECTIONS:
Tare a glass measuring cup on scale.  Carefully add 35g of the powder -- be careful not to stir up the dust; wear a mask perhaps.   Tare the scale again, pour in the boiling water while still on the scale.  Mix gently with a spoon until just combined but lumpy. Wait 5 mins and come back and continue to mix it in.  Scrape the sides with the spoon/liquid.  Eventually it will all dissolve. Let cool and transfer to an 8 oz bottle -- preferably a brown glass one or the like.  Store in fridge.

When needed, we transfer from the 8 oz brown glass bottle to a 4 oz glass bottle with glass dropper.

Well I just ran across some free Splenda yesterday during a coupon haul -- new to me this couponing thing -- and it's disgusting compared to the liquid stevia. :)  I'll be donating it.  I like the taste of the liquid stevia better than most things and it's natural, so I guess it might be healthier I dunno.  The liquid drops make it handy for cold or hot beverages, compared to powder.

is it normal to consume over 10oz stevia per month or do you just tend to exaggerate cost numbers

the standard 8oz bottle shows 1823 4-drop servings per container, so you're somehow consuming over 80 drinks/servings per day?

the normal human household might go through maybe 1-2 bottles per year with heavy usage, so would be a pretty big stretch to get to 3 figures savings for most

I miscalculated. We go through nine eight oz bottles per year.  So savings of like $140 per year.  Just checked on Amazon. We bought nine 8 oz bottles last year.  Each bottle is $17.50.  It costs 1/10th of that to make it homemade.

We use what we use and we sweeten it to a level not any sweeter than a beverage you buy from the grocery, convenience food store, starbucks swetened coffee, etc..  I don't read labels I go by taste and my amazon purchase history.  Marketers lie as well.. their serving could be a sip.  Do you even drink Stevia?

Someone said one 8 oz bottle of liquid stevia is equal to 6 lbs of sugar.  If that's the case between the two of us we consume an equivalent of 6 x 9 pounds of sugar per year, or 54 pounds.  I just read the average American consumes 100 lbs of sugar, so if we were average Americans we'd be consuming 200 lbs of sugar per year.  But we don't consume ANY sugar per year because we don't buy sugar, nor sugary foods, nor even grains. So between us we only consume about 27% of the average American in "sweetener".    So I'd say we are doing pretty well.  We use this sweetener for everything in the house.  Teas, cold teas, other beverages, low carb treats (e.g. berries & cream), Noatmeal (low carb cereal which tastes like Oatmeal but not made with grains), etc..

I've never had Stevia. Honestly, I thought it was some crap fake sugar, but I guess that's Splenda (the missing witch from Wizard of Oz?)
I just use honey as my sweetener, local when I can find it. I estimate I spend $120/yr on honey, and another $20-30 on sugar, mainly for brining salmon.
I don't know if Stevia has more health benefits like honey does. I generally evaluate my food choices on health benefits and taste, then price.
It's great that you're making stuff from scratch.

We also make healthy foods our #1 priority.  I am diabetic and I don't eat any sugar, honey or grains. Only fruit we eat are berries.  Also since my mid 50's BF switched to this sugar free / grain free diet has lost 60 lbs and his waist went from 36 to 30.  He's maintained size 30 without effort for a few years now.
