Hooked on biking
« on: May 23, 2014, 08:44:14 PM »
After stumbling across MMM last winter, I did a major facepalm and realized my family and I really needed to sort ourselves out. We've revamped our budget and spending, are rapidly paying down our stupid debt, and I picked up a used bike trailer on kijiji. Since the spring has sprung around here, I've been biking as much as I can to do errands, get exercise and cart the kids around. I'm fully hooked.

I realize that in the MMM world, this isn't a big deal but it feels downright revolutionary here in the suburbs. Everyone around here drives, mainly out of habit. I didn't realize how crazy it was, until reading MMM and completely changing my viewpoint.

This isn't so much a post to share my badassity, because I'm really just a beginner to all of this, but I'm just so excited about how biking has already changed my life. My kids are 4 and 2 and are at a really impressionable stage. I really feel like the choices my hubby and I make now will have a huge impact on their worldview. I love that biking everywhere is already normal to them after only a few months, despite the car culture in our neighborhood.  Its never occurred to me to bike to work because I do the daycare drop-off every day but tonight I did another facepalm: its only 8km to my work (the kids daycare is 5 min away). Next week I'm totally throwing the little turkeys in the bike trailer and biking to work. I'm ridiculously excited.

My kids love the bike trailer, especially when I ripped the canopy off since they're too big for it - it's basically a wide-open convertible. We've even stopped so they could pick flowers or choice rocks right from the side of the trail without getting out.

Biking is awesome, welcome to the club!
