1. Juice Organic Vegetables a few times a week instead of eating whole
2. Cycle
3. Try to get enough rest
4. Use an electric toothbrush. Works much better-Brush 3x day, floss 3 or 4x week
5. Take vitamin supplements, and sometimes, digestive supplements
6. Try to drink more water
7. Check BP at Rite Aide Pharmacy a few times a year
8. Gargle with Melaleuca Oil(tea tree oil) and a tiny bit of water 1-2x per wk. Rinse w/water 3times after

Homemade dinners with a good amount of veggies every day.
Regular exercize.
No fizzy drinks, just water, some low fat milk, some orange juice, lots of tea (and non-healthy regular beer or sometimes wine).
Wholegrain bread.
Not too much other weird food in between the meals.
Fruit.
No smoking.
Living outside the city.
Making an effort to get enough sleep, even though it is not easy for a notorious difficult sleeper like me.
Trying to reduce stress, as I have a tendency to stress a lot.

Charles Polinquin and his 2 websites http://main.poliquingroup.com/ArticlesMultimedia/Articles.aspx and strengthsensai.com pretty much changed my life.

Everyone should know the basics of how body composition and other aspects of health really works.. the shortest I can type it is this.

#1 Push your body quickly and purposefully(do things that make you exhausted in under an hour and for less than 90second intervals). Whether that be by lifting heavy things for reasonably low numbers or running internalized sprints/rows/whatever. Ladies... lift weights, you wont get bulky or whatever, you will get lean and strong, your body doesnt generally produce the hormonal response necessary for you to look like annie thorisdottir or whatever without living in a gym.

#2 Train how you want to be. Want to look/feel like a sprinter... sprint and lift weights. etc

#3 Eat green things and real food (including lots of fat :) )

#4 Avoid obvious things, simple carbs, sugar, processed items.

#5 Do things you enjoy that are active, cycling and basketball aren't strictly speaking the best body comp things, but I love them and it beats watching netflix :P.

1. A big dose of genetic luck and socioeconomic privilege.
2. Not smoking.
3. Regular meals that include as much as I want of a wide variety of foodstuffs.
4. Enough sleep ... this one is more aspiration than reality a lot of the time.
5. Plenty of exercise that I enjoy, with a mixture of cardio and resistance training.
6. Low but not no alcohol intake.
7. Keeping an eye on those aspects of health that can't be taken for granted when you're, erm, over 21, and might need a little maintenance.
8. Donating blood three or four times a year.
9. Appropriate targeted supplementation - HRT, and a small dose of vitamin D as I live somewhere that's very dark for half the year.
10. Obeying the speed limit on the road.

A few things I thought of that I try to do consistently:
  • A couple of daily outdoor walk breaks at work for some fresh air
  • Standing desk at work
  • Try to eat a wide variety of foods and many food groups with each meal
  • Eat whole grain whenever possible
  • Get out in nature and hike at least once a week
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • No soda (I don't even miss it)
  • Schedule some time to relax daily (meditate, drink a calming hot beverage, read, etc)

I follow the Greek Orthodox fasting diet.  I'm not Greek Orthodox, but I follow the diet nonetheless for health reasons.  Picked it up from reading Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

It involves being Vegan (no meat, egg, or dairy) twice a week.  The Greeks do Wednesdays and Fridays, but we do Tuesdays and Thursdays because I like a nice piece of meat on a Friday evening.  It also involves Vegan during ALL OF Lent and during Advent, which is very difficult.  I usually cave on St. Patty's day to have corn beef and cabbage.  We follow this schedule generally and cheat every now and then, but it is a great way to lose weight.

Also, it makes you appreciate meat and dairy products more when you do eat them.  They actually start to taste better!

That and no processed foods and run 6 miles/day, 5 days a week.  No alcohol during the week.

I like the nine Blue Zones lessons. I don't do all but a fair number of them.

Quote
The nine lessons:

1. Move naturally. Don't do marathons or pump iron; work around the house, garden, walk, cycle, walk when talking on the phone.

2. Know your purpose. Have a reason for waking up in the morning.

3. Kick back. Find ways to shed stress, whether it's praying, napping or going to happy hour.

4. Eat less. Stop eating when you are 80% full.

5. Eat less meat. Beans are a cornerstone of most centenarians' diets.

6. Drink in moderation. Only the Seventh-day Adventists in California didn't have one to two glasses a day.

7. Have faith. Denomination doesn't seem to matter, but attending faith-based services (4 times a month) does.

8. Power of love.
Put families first, including committing to a partner and keeping aging parents and grandparents nearby.

9. Stay social. Build a social network that supports healthy behaviors.

For more details, see

I just want to nail all the basics. We all pretty much know what we have to do in the macro sense. The key is doing all of them at about 80% effectiveness without getting caught up in one and losing track of the others. Those basics to me are:

  • Diet - Eat vegetables, eat good fat sources, and get protein. Don't eat simple sugars or processed junk. Cook my own food.
  • Exercise - Get outside, run around, play sports. Lift weights and walk/bike to the grocery store whenever possible.
  • Sleep - Get it. Exercise helps. If I don't get sleepy at the right time, it means I was lazy that day.
  • Rehab - I have nagging injuries from an aggressive early 20s. Do the rehab stuff everyday. If I miss a day, it won't hurt tomorrow. But it will in a few weeks.

It's been a seesaw with all of these for me. When I was younger, I would exercise 14-18 hours a week and eat whatever shit I wanted. Then I got injuries and only cared about proper rehab. Now I care about cooking more but I don't get to the gym enough. I just need to do all of them to a reasonable amount and make that automatic.

Sleep adequately.
Chill the fuck out.
Move often.  Walk the equivalent of a few miles each day.
Lift heavy things in some capacity (whether its structured Olympic lifting or lifestyle/hobby related or whatever).
Make your own food.
No sugar, no bullshit.
As many vegetables as you can fit down your gullet.
Eat meat that is sensibly prepared, not charred, not breaded, etc.  Include (ideally wild) seafood multiple times per week.

I have goals for myself!! Mainly that I compete and I have a coach who holds me accountable. So I follow a strict exercise and meal plan year round.

I eat vegan. Mostly organic, very little processed foods. High fiber and simple meals. I do not vilify carbs (which is a great low-cost energy source).

Motivation and awareness is what it's all about.. Just like FI and following a budget.

No one does eye exercises?

Drink 2 large glasses of water on rising. Eat breakfast a little later.

Massage head every morning for a few minutes: Move scalp skin gently. Tug locks gently.

Rub face/body with coconut oil, apply milk and then rinse. Soothing.

Simple and effective: sit quietly with eyes shut for 10 mins before every meal (unless really hungry!) Really increases well-being.

Mostly vegan diet (99% vegan, 1% peanut m&m's).

Lots of exercise - I run and do triathlon.

Drink loads of water - at least 3 liters per day.

Practice mindfulness, both as formal meditation and as a general way of thinking/living.

Make time for creative hobbies - mostly sewing (clothes, accessories, & quilts).

Eat a Mediterranean diet

No soda

Take vitamin + fish oil

Walk, walk, walk

Hike. Get out in nature.

I would like to add to my list: increase spending time with friends and family.  And living with a purpose. Still working on those.

I don't always do these as well as I should, but this is my short list of guidelines that usually work well for me.
  • Don't smoke
  • Don't drink alcohol
  • Drink mostly water. I do really well at this one actually. It's been a habit to bring my water bottle everywhere for about 10 years. I drink well over 80 oz a day.
  • Eat vegetables and fruits. I try to eat at least 5 servings (2.5 cups) a day and do pretty well with that target, but I usually aim for at least 7 now that I'm pregnant. Some days (like today) I eat more than 10 half-cup servings.
  • Walk the dog daily
  • Lift weights 3x a week
  • Do some kind of outdoor activity at least once a week, like hiking. Nature makes my heart happy.
  • Chill out and don't obsess about the little things like how much sugar I'm eating or how many carbs I eat.

Eat vegetables, some whole grains, some fruits.  Added beans recently.
Drink water, no sodas.
Run sometimes.

That's all I really do.  So far so good - healthy blood pressure, no meds, no known health problems.  Early 50s.

Health: my list!
Drink 2 glasses of water on rising (I live in a tropical area) Drink water as desired all day.
Begin meals with raw food, like salad. Eat only when hungry.
Dessert is rarely made or kept at home unless it is fruit and nuts.

Eat gratefully. Say grace/equivalent: seems to help digestion and allergies!
Sit still a few minutes, with eyes shut, before each meals and then rise and eat in silence. This is amazing…when I try it.

Brush lightly every time I eat. Rinse thoroughly. Massage gums when possible.
No vitamins or supplements unless ill/stressed.
Bathe mostly with just a pliable loofah, usually twice a day. (Soap only smelly bits, behind ears, etc. and as required for hygiene.)
Apply coconut oil mixed in water for dry skin, rarely need lotion. Rinse.
Wash face with a few drops of milk, followed by coconut oil. Rinse. Nice!

Eye exercises
Stretches on rising followed by a head massage
30 surya namaskars and basic yoga outdoors in the early morning quiet
Dance 15 minutes daily: alone!
Walk where I can, love the staircases. Sit by the sea or in a park and do nothing.

Gratitude for much
Love reiki and Silva Mind Control: some scoff but it works for me. And mine!
Unconcerned who thinks what about me

Work for pleasure: write on culture, occasionally on business. Yes, it makes money, pays transport, I meet people, get samples!

Seek comedy, funny folks and carry jokes to others who love them. Laugh lots.
See or communicate with pals/relatives/saviours ONCE each month
Few or no toxic people in my life
Volunteer at museums/ shelters/ kitchen. Fun!
Go out mostly every evening to good events.

Passive income helps wellbeing!
No buying anything unless needed or it gives joy.
Give small gifts to tellers/ post office/elevator/ security, whoever comes my way
More giving away than buying anything!
Aiming for zero waste in almost everything.

I wear a fitbit and try to get 10,000 steps every day. Usually I go for a walk at lunch, but now that it's hot I have to walk before work.

I don't eat bacon or sausage and rarely eat meat in general. I don't drink soda. The only calories I drink are milk in my coffee and protein shakes.

I take Airborne every day (I take the max daily dose in the winter, summer I take less). It may be placebo but it helps me avoid colds.

My family thinks the amount of hand sanitizer I use is inappropriate but I work in healthcare (ok an offsite business office but still). People are gross.

I don't smoke and only drink at weddings. I have few friends so I attend few weddings!

Eat like a SMART poor person: only visit the outer edges of grocery stores, where the veggies and non-packaged foods are.
Then run like hell outta there.
It's well-established that this will save much $$ and time, and you will be healthier.  Avoid the colourful boxes and tins!

Here's what I've done this year that has (1) lead to 50+lb weight loss and (2) got me off anti-depressants:
- Be consistent
- Log everything I eat in a food log app (lead to better choices and simplifying breakfast and lunch to a handful of options).
- Move daily (I go to a decidedly unmustachian gym for strength circuit classes, cardio circuit classes, and yoga - go almost daily)
- Meditation and mindfulness practice (this was the most recent piece of the puzzle)

1. Getting enough sleep.

2. Cultivating a low-stress life style (includes not having to worry about money, having enough time with friends & enough time by myself; knowing how to maintain flexible boundaries, how to detach, etc.)

3. Finding diet that is healthiest for me, then sticking to it semi-religiously (example I rarely if ever eat dessert, unless it happens to be a social occasion where someone is proud of the special dessert that made themselves, then I will have a taste.)

4. Taking really good probiotics 2x/day (expensive, but necessary for my health)

5. Regular, interesting moderate exercise (I've been hurt almost as much by too much exercise as by too little).

6. Using the Internet as a complementary source of health info (I.e. Not necessarily running to my Dr. for every little problem or blindly following their advice.

No particular order, but here is what I've been trying to adopt for the last 18 months:

1) Getting 8 hours of sleep each night.  I used to stay up past midnight on the weekends and it completely threw me off.  Now, we stick to a fairly tight schedule (in bed by 10/10:15, up by 6:30 at the latest during the week).  Sometimes we stray an extra hour or so on the weekends if we're meeting up with friends or whatnot, but it makes it much easier come Monday morning to get up.  I track, roughly, my sleep with a Fitbit.

2) The Fitbit has helped me to be aware of how sedentary I can be if I'm not paying attention.  We take the dog on walks.  We moved so now we bike/walk to work (about ~1 mile each way).  We try to keep ourselves active when not working.  Just generally being aware of moving around and not being a blob on the couch for 2-3 hours at a time.

3) I went vegan at the start of last year.  I wasn't overweight or unhealthy, but through friends/family having dietary issues, I started researching more about food and specifically food consumption in the U.S.  My diet was pretty typical of a western diet - a lot of cheese, a lot of fast food, a lot of processed foods.  I wasn't a big meat eater anyway, so it wasn't a huge transition.  I started cooking more (still learning!) which caused me to buy whole foods at the store a lot more.  So now I focus on whole foods, plant based when I can.  That is probably 2/3 to 3/4 of my diet now.  We only buy whole wheat bread/bagels/etc.  We get the reduced sodium sauces if available and unsweetened soy/almond/non-dairy milk.  So we also try to watch the extra "crap" - sugar added, too much salt, too many chemicals/preservatives.  Obviously we eat no meat, dairy, or eggs but also try to reduce carbs, sugar, and to some extent salt as well as "crap" - if I read the label and I can't identify 2-3 of the ingredients because they're chemicals, I'll probably pass.  All of this has yielded some health benefits for me, but I know there isn't a diet that fits everyone's needs/lifestyle.

3) I supplement with a daily multivitamin and B12.  Also take a probiotic pill and vitamin D3 every few days.

4) Always looking to improve.  We don't extensively research, but we do read up on new findings/studies or new products friends or family might recommend.

5) Meditation/mindfulness.  It's hard, but we do our best to try to keep calm after a stressful day or anything like that.  We will utilize the "head space" guided sessions if needed.  Used to do yoga for this (and the physical benefits) as well but we have not gone regularly, largely due to cost.

6) No soda/pop/juices.  Water is what we drink 90% of the time.  Do have coffee in the mornings, but just a cup.  Drink limited amounts of alcohol now, and mostly just Fridays/Saturdays if we do at all.

7) No smoking - this is a given, but thought I'd list.
