Growing that moustache with Gillette MACH3(R) Razors?
« on: August 06, 2015, 08:22:04 PM »
After meeting and hanging with MMM himself at a meetup last night, I was inspired to return to the forum and provide a little tip I had picked up in my absence.

In my work life, I have to appear on TV from time to time. Now, will scraggly stubble ruin my career? Probably not. I live on the casual West Coast. Does it help that a clean-shaven image goes hand-in-hand with a clean-shaven attitude at work? Probably.

With that in mind, I shave twice a week. Not with a grandpa safety razor and not with a great grandpa straight razor (although, I have frustratingly shaved with one a few times). I shave with the most anti-mustachian cartridge of them all: the Gillette MACH3(R) Mens's Razor.

I have been cutting my whiskers at least twice a week since March with only one SINGLE MACH3 cartridge. In the past, one cartridge had comfortably lasted me maybe a month at shaving twice a week, but recently I've been able to extend its life with no end in sight through simple stropping.

Do you need a fancy leather strip from the shaving store to do this? No. All you need is the towel wrapped around your waist and your forearm.

How to strop a MACH3(R) Razor:

0. Wait until the razor-sharp sheen of your new cartridge has faded and you are thinking of chucking it because your face is getting all cut up.
1. Attach the cartridge to your razor handle the morning or evening of your shaving routine.
2. Push the razor in straight lines against the terrycloth towel that is wrapped around your waist 12 times. If you shave in the buff, use the hand cloth hanging up on the ring in your bathroom.
3. Take one bare forearm and do the same thing 12 times, pushing the razor in one direction. Don't pull, or you will cut yourself, silly.
4. Shave and revel in the cleverness of your ways.
5. Repeat the towel and forearm stropping after your shave
6. Eject the cartridge into its little plastic case for storage.

I don't know what magic science exists behind this approach, but the razor seems to get no more dull, even after months. So far, I haven't cut myself at all -- which is even better than a new blade after five or six shaves. About two or three days stubble is the perfect length to get a nice, close shave.

I haven't bought cartridges since March, yet I am still reaping the benefits of a baby-smooth face, without the old fashioned shaving paraphernalia associated with frugal grooming.

At the rate I'm going, I may be spending $15 for four cartridges every two years, if that.

The science behind it is that over time, the hairs warp and deform the blade so it becomes wavy, causing the shaving experience to grow worse over time, especially where the edge is since it is thinner and more prone to warping. Stropping a razor smooths out and flattens the thin sharp edge, allowing you to get more shaves out of the blade before needing sharpening (or discarding for a new blade). I do this with my cheapy two blade disposables I use for my legs, and they last months that way.

Oh, and my husband gets his razors from 99¢ razors (learned about them from the Frugal Girl website) and they are great. They can send you a handle, and two blade sample pack, and then you canjust reorder the blades whenever (and they're way cheaper than store bought and the husband says they are just as good a quality).

Why not use the DE SR? I made the switch a few years ago and will never go back to cartridge type razors. Once you get used to it and find the right blade, you almost never cut yourself, yet end up with a really close shave and for extremely cheap. As I'm sure you know, you can get blades for less than $0.10 each that last a few weeks or longer.

You have a towel around your waist?  Sounds kind of spendy to me.

But anyhow... going down below my waist to strop a blade, small though it be, is a bit terrifying.

If you know what I mean, and I think you do.

I've been using one of these for about four years, and I haven't bought blades since:

Agreed.

I use a double edge safety razor with FEATHER razor blades... which are amazing!  I've tried several sampler packs of different razor blades and feather are by far the best in my opinion.  The shave I can do with my DE is far superior than the mach3 or similar, and I never get razor burn anymore.  Plus it's cheaper.  :)

These are arguably not the most mustachian option:

http://www.amazon.com/Dorco-Plus--Blade-System-Trimmer/dp/B008O82O7C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1439156820&sr=8-1&keywords=dorco+blades

But I bought this pack 4 months ago and I'm still on the first cartridge (haven't touched the other 9).  Admittedly I don't keep myself super clean shaving, and typically only shave twice a week.  I expect this supply to last me three years at this rate.  Since it saves me from having to invest in a strop, blade sharpener, SR, etc. and having to learn the skills involved - I consider the $21 investment pretty awesome.  I know it's not the cheapest (long term) route, but so far it seems like a decent tradeoff.

Just FYI - Dorco makes the same blades that Dollar Shave Club hawks, with the exception you can buy them from Dorco without the markup DSC puts on them.  Also, if this option interests you, when it comes time to buy check the amazon price and the price from the Dorco website - sometimes one beats out the other.

I'm leaning towards going back to Mach 3. Does this work for them? Do you just use this after each time you shave and how long does each cartridge last?

I hope to not have to pay for a razor for over 2 decades - currently at 5+ years since my last purchase.

My secret is that I work in retail and every year we meet with vendors for freebies and over the last several years I've loaded up at the Bic booth. The 20 year estimation is on my use (twice a week at near 2 months of use per blade). The multi blade razors last quite a bit longer, but currently trying to use my overstock to reduce storage. :)

And watch the sales. I bought a ton of razor cartridges from KMart for $1.50 or so per five catridges. Needed different handle than I have already but I'll probably be able to shave for a decade once I go get the right handle. I was using their store brand razors and they lasted much better than the name brand stuff. Korean made I read. Switched to some a name brand that was on sale elsewhere and haven't needed to use my horde of KMart sourced razors.

I shave about three times per seven days. Will try the DIY strop with the towel. Thanks.

It's not even funny anymore. I had been using the same M3 cartridge since August of TWO YEARS AGO when I finally decided to chuck the cartridge for a new one.

At this rate, my costco pack of cartridges that my gilfriend bought 6 years ago will outlast me!!!!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
