Grocery clearance deals!
« on: July 19, 2023, 11:05:20 PM »
I ALWAYS check the clearance areas looking for deals and while most of the time I'm disappointed, the times I score, I score BIG. Today was a random drop in at a local Kroger store.

OMG

Aidells Cajun Style Andouille Smoked Pork Sausage 4 links - $2/package (regular price $5.99)
Simple Truth bacon 12 oz. - $2.30/package (regular price $6.99)
Smithfield thick cut applewood smoked 24 oz. - $3.78 (reg. $8.99)
Kroger brand french vanilla ground coffee - $1.30 (reg. $6.99)

a few other bits and pieces for more than 50% off

I don't usually shop at Kroger any more as they're definitely overpriced compared to my true love Aldi, but these clearance prices can't be beat. <3

Yeah, @Lews Therin tipped me off to a place that collects all of this kind of stuff from local grocery stores and sells a week's worth of groceries for $40.

It's what I miss most about being away from my city home right now, because groceries on a remote island are pretty insane.

Excellent catch.  I check the clearance racks at Kroger and have gotten good deals.  Canned vegetables for less than $0.50.  Canned pumpkin and sweet potatoes after the holidays is good for filling the cabinet.

I've gotten a lot of gluten free mixes and flours.  The biggest markdowns are the cough/cold/flu meds.  Not expired and good to have on hand.

The funniest to me was the $20 toilet plunger and stand for $3.  These things don't go bad.

I've gotten some spectacular buys at my Sprouts.  I asked the meat guy about it when buying Italian Sausage for 99 cents a pound.  He said that they have the highest sales volume for Sprouts in my city so when Sprouts has an overstock, closing out an item or items are reaching sale by date they send it to my store.  Over the last 6 months I've gotten:

Italian sausage for 99 cents a lb (links one time and loose 1 lb packages 3 times)
Marinated b/s chicken breasts for 99 cents a lb.
Coconut milk and cream for 50 cents a can (I bought what may be a lifetime supply)
Organic flour $1.99 for 5 lbs (several varieties: whole wheat, bread, red wheat)
Tomato based pasta sauce 99 cents for 24 oz jars

Many times my space limitations limit how much I buy.  We have a non-huge refrigerator by American standards so limited freezer space plus there's only two of us.

you guys are SO my people.  Few things get me more excited than hitting a good sale at the grocery!!!

No great deals this week, however.  Was travelling and had to shop on a Sunday when we got home.  Ugh.

More ptf than anything because I haven't found anything good in a little while. Probably my best find was boneless skinless chicken breast got $1/lb few years ago I probably got at least 50 if not 75 lb of it. It was a beautiful day.

The actual clearance rack is mostly bakery at our store, so I don't even check it very often. But they put "Manager's special" stickers on things approaching expiration date and group ugly veg together, so I grab those discounts when they are something we will eat.

14 boxed of Milli's gluten free cookie mixes.  Normally, the premixed stuff isn't a good deal since I bake from scratch, but for $0.65 a box, you really can't argue.  Too bad it's too hot to bake.  I will add it to the pantry and save it for cooler weather.

I got to Sam's Club right after opening today and got 4 whole organic chickens and 2 bulk packages of boneless skinless chicken breasts for 25% off.  It's not the most fantastic grocery clearance deal, but it's solid.  The b/s breasts came in at $4.40/# and the whole chickens at $1.93/#.  Also, the chicken is air chilled, so I wasn't paying for retained water.

Last week Costco was clearing out my favorite honey roasted macadamia nuts at $9 for 24 ounces, down from the regular price of $13.99.  I hated to see the death star on the price sign, as these are really good, grown in Hawaii macadamia nuts and only contain the nuts, honey, sugar, and salt.  Based on the best buy dates, I bought 10 bags.  We'll eat some as snacks, and I'll grind the rest into macadamia nut butter and freeze it to get a longer life span (they won't freeze well as nuts as the honey roasted coating will get sticky when defrosting).  Costco used to carry macadamia nut butter, but they don't anymore, so I grind these nuts into butter and enjoy it on my toast -- it's way better tasting than the macadamia nut butter they used to carry.  I also turn the nuts or nut butter into macadamia milk for smoothies.

Balls of fresh mozzarella that are usually $4.99 were $1.29. I bought 2 (we have no freezer and our fridge is tiny or I’d have cleaned them out.)

Dinner is clearly caprese salad. Perfect for this heat!

got half price Bitchin sauce (been looking for it since the mention by @Sailor Sam in another thread!)

got two bags of bagged salad with all the toppings for 1$ each.  These are one of my favorite meals but I choke at the 4-5 dollar price point.

I regularly work at our local free meal sites helping serve and also helping out at the free market. Local groceries donate produce and frozen food. At the end of the night all volunteers are allowed to take the same amounts of produce that other recipients get -- food that would otherwise go to waste. Last week after my shift I brought home several large containers of very yummy berries and pluots.

Let me just say that I enjoy the volunteer gig and would do it without any perks. This was unexpected. I donate my extra garden produce, and the whole experience has really opened my eyes about how much food waste there is in most communities, including at grocery stores and restaurants. So much perfectly good produce gets tossed.

I call this section the smash and grab, and didn't realize how crazy I sounded until we went to a new store and my daughter asked the clerk where it was.

"Pardon, kind sir, but can you direct me to the smash and grab?"

Safeway scores -
generic diet soda 12 pack for 1.79
generic sparkling water 7 pack (should have been 8 pack) for 1.50

DH drinks this stuff and will go to the store and buy it full priced so I try to be proactive in getting it for cheap.

Even thought safeway (albertsons) is one of the most expensive stores out there, I get a lot of stuff on sale there. They had a summer game I won about $300 in discounts playing. The other day I had 96% savings on my receipt after buying about 20 things.

I like getting marked-down desserts at Walmart and realized last month on certain days they mark down pre-packaged salads that I like.

I shop once or twice a month at King Soopers (Krogers), and I prefer going early Sunday mornings. If I can get the timing right (usually about 8) the produce has mostly been freshly stocked, and the meat department has finished marking down the stuff they want to unload. Since I'm literally going to drive 7 minutes home and throw that stuff in the freezer, I often go for it. This week I got 2 lbs of Italian sausage, a pound of chorizo, some chicken, and some fancy pork chops for under $20. (We'll use it all, slowly -- we eat less and less meat)

Last weekend I got 8 lbs of local organic vegetables from my very expensive farmers' market.  TooGoodToGo app entitled me to $30 of produce from a particular stand for $10.  They were marking everything down at the end of the day because of the huge bounty summer growing brings.

8 lbs of produce for $10 may not sound that great.  But a local, small, organic farmer is
a win for me.  This is the kind of place that usually charges $4 for a lb of varied colored beans or a head of lettuce.

My local Meijer has opened a flashfood section (the app) - I frequently check it but am usually disappointed. Stuff seems to always go on 50% discount, which is quite good IF you were going to buy the stuff anyways, but most of the time it’s stuff I don’t buy. Bakery items, expensive meat cuts, meal kits etc. We need a good discount grocer.

I wish we had better options in Louisiana, but I did stumble upon a great clearance on tahini, curry paste, tamari, and several different curry sauces.  They are all very expensive here bc they aren’t very popular and there aren’t inexpensive ethnic stores here,  so the prices wouldn’t impress but getting things at 50-75% off was fabulous!

Lip Balm - different name brands.  $1.20 a tube compared to $3 each.  These rarely go bad and I share with the kids.  Yes, I bought all of them.  This time there were 6.  Last time I got 25.  Set for another year.

My Sprouts had a Manager's Special on Hatch Chilies 2 lb for $1.  Very sad, last case found in the back of the warehouse.  I was able to pick through and get 2 good lbs.

Dont forget drug stores! At the Walgreens next to my local library I've recently gotten 3L wine boxes for 4.50, 8oz bags of chocolate covered nuts for .29, and a backyard splash pad for 3.50 (ok not all necessary but fun).   The month before they had an online shopping promotion where I got back about as much as I spent  in points so I've been using those instead of real money.

Real French gruyère for $2 a pack reduced from $8.99 at our local Superstore yesterday, I grabbed 6 packs and would have gladly taken the rest but I had met a young couple speaking French over the bread section a minute before so I told them about the stash. They were ecstatic. Last time I was at the same Superstore, Boursin with cranberries was $0.94, down from $6-something. Not my favorite flavor, I prefer herbs, but at that price, it will do. I'm visiting from Mexico where our local cheese offerings are pretty slim, so I'll be on a cheese and baguette diet until my pants start getting too tight...

Not strictly a clearance deal, because it was the cut price grocery store to begin with. Usually milk is $1.99-$2.49. Today it rang up at $0.97...score!

Picked up some pool rings (big ones with the handles and all sparkly and coolio) for $1.50 and regular ones for 80¢ at Target this past week. It's still surface of the sun hot in my area, so this is an awesome deal.

Aldi hasn't been as gracious with the deep discounts/clearance items as usual late, but I got some nice displays for free to use for Halloween projects. I ask whenever I see (target/aldi/etc) the clear round plastic bins that they use to hold umbrellas or other items and they work REALLY well for freaky display cases that I can light up for my circus freakshow Halloween decor.

I bought a big bag of apples, probably about 10 lbs, at Woodmans for 99 cents. Some were bruised but most seemed just fine. The bruised ones are in the crockpot along with some windfalls and will be a couple of jars of applesauce by tonight.

This morning I got several boxes of herb tea for $1 each and a great big thing of kcups for $5. Also 2.5 lbs of marked down ground beef that has been turned into meatballs.

I got five large (maybe 24", can't remember) meat heavy frozen pizzas for $2.00 a pizza. We don't eat them a lot because they're very bad for you, but it solves the pizza night question we have occasionally with the kids for five nights!

Last week I was shopping at Safeway and noticed several of those large rectangular cartons of soup on the clearance rack, carrot ginger flavor or something like that. I picked up two. Later that afternoon my wife came home from an outing with the kids, and she picked up a discounted carton of that same soup from a completely different supermarket chain. Weird coincidence! It must not have been selling well. I tried some and liked it, but the strong ginger flavor might not have been everyone's favorite.

Soy sauce here is very expensive, but I found a giant jug in the clearance cart at the grocery store for $2. It "expires" this Jan, but soy sauce basically lasts forever unopened, so yay, I'll have plenty of soy sauce for next season when we come back, which is perfect since I *just* ran out this season and we leave soon.

I'm such a regular at my local Aldi, they lovely workers always recognize me and are so sweet. I have no idea if this is just how they are with everyone but I kind of think... no?

Because I had 3 family sized chicken quarters in my cart for $1 off each... and the lovely young man that I know and greet by name whenever gave them to me for half off. There were LOTS of them back in the meats section and I didn't ask him to do so, so I think it was just they were good on getting them out the door.

It does pay to be pleasant and nice to folks. You never know how, but I keep getting tiny little paybacks I don't ask for or expect.

Funny, I had a similar experience at Costco recently. My friend wanted to look into hearing aids. I suggested Costco and she asked me to go with her. While she was being tested, I did a quick shop. I got back early and noticed a basket in the go-back area labeled "markdowns" so of course  I peeked. I found a case of Sterno, which I've never seen in a warehouse before. It caught my eye, because when we were in the kid's chi-chi mountain town, we'd had to pay $6/can for it.

My friend was just finishing up as I was asking the hearing aid clerk (who I'm on a first name basis with) about it. She told my to take it to the service desk and ask for a manager. I did so, and the manager who responded was also someone I know. He looked it up, and the system showed a price of $24.95. He looked at me, thought a moment, and wrote $11.50 on the case. The case had 24 cans!

My friend was gobsmacked that I knew so many people. I was gobsmacked by the deal.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
