Some numbers from cancelled cable, cellphones and some savings
« on: November 07, 2012, 11:46:32 AM »
I cancelled our cellphones 32 months ago.   Total savings assuming the costs hadn't increased - $3,296  I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've wished I had a cellphone in that time.  Each time I've used a pay phone so total cost about $1

I cancelled our Cable 30 months ago. Total savings assuming costs hadn't increased - $1,895.67  I've not missed this 1 bit.

My most recent ING statement tells me that since opening my account I've made $1312.58 in interest even though It's never really had much money in there and I didn't rely on it to grow my money it was just somewhere to put some cash aside. I believe I've had this account almost 10 years.

So basically I have an extra $6405  and it's had effectively no effect on my life.  That's a decent car.

This is some inspiring stuff, and it's kind of the goal and point of my communications guide. If you're gonna use the stuff, pay as little as you can, but if you don't need it...

For the interest of continuing the topic, the missus and I over the past five years have saved roughly $3500 ourselves on just the cell phone switches and cable bill elimination with how we handle things. You throw in the savings on a land line for us going to a VoIP provider over those years, that adds on another $1400 of savings. I'd say we've hardly suffered with the changes, too.

It adds up fast.

Excellent, painless savings!

I'd forgo the car to save more, but where I live that is feasible.  It certainly isn't everywhere.

And I use the data plan on my cell phone for when I am away two months in the summer.  If not for my son, I'd drop my internet and just use my data plan and the wifi at the library.

It's strange.  I've never had a car so I don't miss having one, but if I didn't have my cell phone with data plan, I'd feel lost.  What a sucker I am!

Congrats. Those things really make a difference. In July '11 (when I moved) I cancelled cable, Vonage, gym and downgraded Netflix to streaming only. I also went for a cheaper internet option. Those things were about $250 each month and I miss none of them.

I really think it's the little, regular outgoings that chip away at you finances.

I am happy to say that I've very rarely every paid for cable television or satellite service - I don't plan to ever again.  I can remember the last time I had service... it was a meager $46/month, but that expense always bothered me a lot.

I think it's been 2 years since I canceled, so I'll chalk up $1104 savings since then.

My cell phone bill started out innocently enough... I think it was in the $35-45 range before I bought the smart phone and tacked on the data package.  Then it was the switch to unlimited, because I was texting a lot, and a particular client had an affinity for talking through every issue.  Somehow I ended up with a $100/month bill, which I successfully vanquished in June!

I now pay $31/month for pre-paid t-mobile, and it's awesome!  Skype & google talk make up most of my outgoing calls, and I've trained most people to not expect me to answer if they call me. Add $414 of savings since June to my tally.

There are so many other examples that we could all share, not even related to the tech/entertainment products.  For example, if my house refinance goes through, my payment will be $200/month less.

Double post... just wanted to post some more awesome numbers.

Bought a more compact car in April... lower maint. costs, and lower gas costs. Also biking more.  I would burn $125-$150/month of gas in my old SUV, the new car + biking costs $60-$90/month.  Let's say 8 months worth of saving $60/month, that's a total of $480.  I also sold the old vehicle, and had an extra ~$3,000 from the sale after paying for the new car.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
