Fun way to "find" money
« on: January 30, 2020, 02:55:59 PM »
I've gone to missingmoney.com a totally legit site and found all sorts of money for myself, family and other ppl.  It's money that was in your name that was escheated to the state.  I've gotten money from an insurance company I used to have and a Upromise account I forgot all about.  Family has gotten money from old employers, old bank accounts, utility companies, etc.  it's kind of addictive and you start looking up everyone you know.  It can be a few bucks or hundreds or more.

Fun to do and you might find money that was yours in the first place that you never got.

I've checked and never found money for myself, but every couple of years I check for family.  I found money for my SIL (deposit for a utility) and recently, money for my husband's cousin.  She had bought some shares for her nephew when he was born about 15 years ago.  The company went private and somehow the money went to the state.  No clue why since she hasn't even moved!  She was very happy I sent her the link to claim it though!

My state doesn't participate, but I did find an unclaimed escrow account for my SIL on my state's website.

Important:  even if your state doesn't participate they still are holding your escheated funds. Go to the state website, probably the computer's office page or search your state and unclaimed funds.  They will have a similar page to search for money

I have looked before. I have less than $50 in a state that wants proof of either the address on record or dealings with the business. It has been 20 years. Since then, I have lived in four different states and two countries besides the US. Dealing with that would not be my idea of fun.

While my state doesn't participate in missingmoney.com, missingmoney.com provided a link directly to the state's online search page when I selected the state (I already knew where it was, my dad's career was with the agency).

I did this a few years ago and found almost $500, a deposit on an old apartment that I had forgotten about. So for fun I looked up my relatives, and found several thousand dollars of my mother's life insurance that my father hadn't claimed.

It's kind of addictive.  You start looking up everyone you know.  The only problem is that ppl think it's a scam.  But I've found money for over a dozen ppl.

That is totally addicting! I just looked up everyone in my family, living and deceased. Almost everyone had some claims.

I got a crystal Tiffany & Co wine decanter for my wedding which I returned for store credit and never claimed. I might be getting $43 back! Woot!

Thanks for the tip, DeniseNJ!

Your insurance may have sent you a bunch of small checks or covered copays or something for doc visits.  They could be 20 bucks a piece for copays you weren't supposed to pay.  You never know.

How do you convince someone it's legit?  I guess if they go to their state comptroller site and search unclaimed funds, most states will send to to this site if they participate.  Maybe then ppl will know it's for real.

I checked this a few years ago and had nothing. I just checked it again, and I had $41 associated with an address I lived at a decade ago. It appears that it wasn't reported until 2018.

Money gets escheated regularly but the accounts have to be inactive for like 5 yrs or so.  Even if you didn't have soemthing last year, you might now.

A friend just got her check for $125.

At some point all this Robinhood free stock will be forgotten about and end up on Missingmoney. :)

Oh, this is important:  When you look up yourself, don't put your town or city, just use your state.  I found another friend yesterday and she said she went on and found nothing.  Well they had her at her old address in another town--which makes sense, since if they had her address, they could have sent her the money (not necessarily but still).

Use your full name but also try your first initial and last name since sometimes properties are listed like that.  And just use the state.  And also try any other state you've lived in.

You ever notice how people who deal under the table or somewhat dishonestly themselves a bunch of the time assume that literally everyone else is doing something shady too? Found nothing for ourselves, but a couple of others turned up in the searches. "It's a scam" is the reaction.

I actually didn't even refer them to this particular site - I sent them to the treasurer of their state where they can search at an actual government website, thinking surely that would help them see it is legitimate. But I suppose I should have seen this coming - they trust the state government less than some random insurance company that is handling their retirement assets but still way more than the federal government.

Yes... I've been confused by this reaction too, and not just by people who are doing something dishonest themselves (as far as I know).
I found some lost money of my own recently, on the treasury site of a state where I'd lived years ago, and while I was doing that search I found four listings for my brother-in-law's name.  When I mentioned it to him he said he knows about them and they've  been there for years, and no he doesn't know what they're for or how much $...  but, he has no interest in finding out, because he thinks it's "some kind of trap by the state."
Perhaps a fear of being trapped by the state should be an indication that he's been up to something trap-worthy?  Or is it just general paranoia of all government doings?

Found a $10 rebate from Belkin.  Seems legit, I used to go for rebates all the time.

Ineligible to file electronically, I'll have to print & mail forms.

Printing 3 pages: $0.13 x 3 = $0.39
Photocopy of DL and SS card = $0.13 (est)
Stamp = $0.55
Envelope (sunk cost)

Total = $1.07, plus *how* much of my time?????  Although I will still do it ;)

I found $17 but not willing to risk sending photo copies of both my social security card and driver’s license in the mail.  Why in the world do they not have a way to securely upload those docs in this day and age with so much identity theft!

This site links out to the various official state sites: https://unclaimed.org/

I used this website first to link to my official state's website and found $37.
I used the website linked in the first post and found nothing, so id suggest people try both sites.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
