Free food

20 lb bag of field potatoes, free because they were smelling whiffy and were destined for trash.
A little gross washing later, and I have ~10 lbs of clean whole potatoes set aside for later, 3 lbs of nasty to the compost, and 7lbs boiled up for mash/soup/latkes. About 3 lbs to the freezer and 4 lbs to eat up this week. I know you shouldn’t freeze potatoes, but I think we can overcome quality issues in casseroles.

I freeze potatoes!  But then again, I freeze everything.

You can par-bake first for better results.  I make a lot of potato hashes when I have potatoes from my CSA.  When the potato is too large for one serving, I put the extra cubed pieces (after par baking in the microwave) in the freezer for later.  They pan fry (direct from frozen) very well.

We have family visiting. They brought us lots of beer bottles of their local beer, 2 bottles of whisky, 8 packs of Dutch chocolate stuff to put on your sandwich, a few pots of home made jam, 3 bags of licorice bits and a whole brie (not french made, but a Scandinavian copy).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
