Free bike maintenance
« on: March 22, 2015, 12:56:54 PM »
The local bicycle co-op hosted a free basic bike maintenance class yesterday. I was the only one who showed up with a bike, so the instructor hoisted my ride up on the rack and basically gave it a tune up while showing me how to fix common problems. Riding home I couldn’t stop smiling - no more random squeaks and honks, and now I know how to keep it that way.

Badass! :-)

If I can't find something similar around here, I'm going to sign up for a class offered at a local bike shop. I've often thought being a part-time bike mechanic would be a pretty sweet side gig that could double as a way to downshift as I wind down working for The Man. Would probably save on transportation costs in the near-term, too.

Alternately, it lets you buy good quality bicycles with some major mechanical issues on Craigslist or the like, fix them yourself, and flip them for a nice profit.  After, of course, extensive test riding for a few weeks (or months, if it's really nice - wouldn't want to let a problem slip past!) to make sure everything is working properly.

Bikes are so simple.  Even fancy ones.  Though I'll draw the "absurd" line somewhere before shift-by-wire systems to save a few grams.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
