Fixed the gas heater :)
« on: February 14, 2014, 08:40:03 AM »
We're pretty pleased with ourselves at saving an expensive repair technician.  Yesterday morning, realized the heat didn't seem to be working in the upstairs. Turned up the downstairs heat a bit while gone to compensate some (hoping to avoid frozen/burst pipes given the big storm yesterday) and went off to work, to deal with it when we got home.

Discovered we really do have two furnaces (yeah should have asked questions more of the inspector), which he had mentioned but we didn't understand at the time, which create the two "zones".  One is in the attic, one in the basement.  Fiddled around a bit testing things.  Switched out the attic filter and got it working again.  I think it got clogged up when we had the floors refinished before moving in.

Just bought the house and feel like a bunch of things have broken shortly after moving in, so it's nice to have a "win" here, however small, on the home repair side and feel like we can learn the house and how to fix it.  Now, to fix the broken toilet handle, loose shower tiles and improperly installed bars for clothes in the closet (studs?  what are those?)...  And to get rid of the mice

Had mice in an old house once.  I took steel wool to all the cracks and put poison in the attic and basement.  Took care of them...

Congrats on the savings!
