Fixed my snowblower - Thank you Mustachians!
« on: February 06, 2014, 07:33:54 AM »
Our area got 16" of snow this week. While DH is out of town I decided to use the snowblower to speed the job of clearing our 50' long driveway. In the process I managed to run over the newspaper that was buried under the snow. This snapped the auger belt and jammed the blower grinding the whole contraption to a halt.

I knew that I could shovel our driveway. But I wanted to be badass and try some repairs without calling the Sears repair guy.

I dug out the owners manual and took the whole thing apart. Over the course of 3 hours I chiseled the colossal spit ball of compressed newspaper and ice out of the blades and then put on a new auger belt and got it working!

Folks I am a 40 year old woman who grew up in a sunshine state in the south. I'm no longer content to take the path of least resistance. Reading MMM and then joining the forums almost 2 years ago has shown me there is another way. Self-sufficency is a skill and muscle that should be exercised.

I am carrying this philosophy over to our middle schoolers. My husband and I remind them daily that doing things that are hard is good for them. We will continue to encourage them and ourselves to push through the hard stuff because the rewards are worth it.

So thank you MMM & everyone on these forums. You encourage me, challenge me and keep me motivated!

This resonates so much with me ... the 'hard work is good for me' principle is my number one message from reading MMM.

So ... nice job and thanks for sharing your story! You've motivated me to tackle some home repairs with part of my day-off time today.

Good job!  While I feel sorry for the "Sears repair guy" (they still have those?) it's offset by the admiration for you for having the gumption to try and DIY.

Good job on the repair!
I to use a snow blower here in Iowa. Mine is a riding mower with snow blower. The lift part broke and now I get to fix it tonight. I usually do 3-4 driveways for my neighbors so need this running. I found the owners manual online and start tearing it apart tonight.
I dislocated my right shoulder almost 2 years ago and it still continues to give me problems so I choose to no longer shovel. I use to scoff at people that used them until I injured myself. Living in Iowa 15 years now and tired of snow.
