Fixed Dryer for 6$ in ten minutes
« on: August 28, 2014, 07:47:51 AM »
Last week my wife found that our dryer was getting hot but not spinning. In my old, non-mustachian days I would have either a) bought a new dryer for 500$ immediately or b) called an appliance repairman and spend 100+$ on a fix.

Instead, I did some research. The symptoms seemed to show that the belt had broken. I purchased a belt on amazon for 6$. Then, using this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzYmoS9brMY

I was able to take apart the dryer and replace the belt in about 10 minutes flat! It was amazing how simple a dryer is when you open it up. And this video showed my dryer exactly in the way it was constructed.

Anyways, I don't usually brag but I was super proud of myself. Next time an appliance breaks I will try my luck again!

Nice job!  I've been successful fixing dishwashers, furnaces, lawn mowers, snowblowers, etc. just doing a little research and using common mechanical sense.  I've probably saved $1000s over the last ten years this way.

Good work! I've had a lot of luck fixing appliances using videos from Youtube and cheap parts from Amazon.

We've been in our house for over ten years now, and we're still using the washer, dryer, and stove that came with the place -- and since it was a rental for years before we bought it, I'm pretty sure they were the cheapest junk that Sears had on sale in the early 90s.

You are VERY cool.  The internet is really changing how we do things.  Last week the Hub fixed the washer using info he found and my 74 year old neighbor recently chortled to me about how much she saved fixing a drawer herself with an internet video.

My dad was the kind of guy who could fix anything.

I am not.

So whenever something needs fixing, and I can't figure it out (which is often), I go directly to Youtube.  There are an amazing number of "how to" videos there.  Some good, some not so good, but if you click through a few of them, you'll usually find something helpful.

Most things are a lot more simple than they appear once you open them up....  washers, dryers, computers, cars, the family dog...
