First post: Red Bull Settlement ($10 cash / $15 products)
« on: October 09, 2014, 06:01:32 AM »
Hi all! I've been reading the blog and the forums for a couple of months and find them oh-so-inspiring as I build my stash! Thanks!

I wanted to share the fact that Red Bull has offered a settlement of $10 cash or $15 in products for anyone who (supposedly) drank a Red Bull since 2002 and fills out a claim. See more info here (http://abcnews.go.com/US/bought-red-bull-2002-10/story?id=26062551). Despite the fact that the suits were silly (Really? It doesn't give me wings?), heck yeah I put in for a check!

Ooh, thanks! I sent the link to DH; he went through a lot of energy drinks in college and I'm guessing at least one was a Red Bull.

I used to work for Red Bull, most fun job I have ever had...but they did not pay overly well. I am considering my $10 a bonus from my job a few years back ;)

Seriously? Red Bull settled a lawsuit from some guy who sued them because he didn't grow wings (i.e. improve his athletic performance)???

*sigh* Only in America...

That is pretty cool.

Here is another one where you can get $5 back from the Girl Scouts if you didn't like their cookies:

The Girl Scouts is a great organization that does a ton of good for girls across the country.  Please don't take $5 from them.

Donate $5 to them instead and know you've made someone's life just a little brighter.

It was a joke.   I don't think scamming any company for a few bucks is a morally good idea.   Nobody really thought you could grow wings from a drink...probably more people would sue if they actually did start to grow something on their back after drinking Red Bull.

I can't figure out if Red Bull has the worst lawyers in the world, or a brilliant marketing department.  The lawyers would probably cost more than $13M if the case drags on for years (like they all do).  The $10 cash/$15 voucher is a clever move; a lot of people will take the extra 5 and buy some Red Bull with it.  $13M isn't a lot of money to an advertising department looking to gain market share.

Or, I'm giving them too much credit.

Submitted a claim, pretty sure I've had a few Red Bulls in the past 12 years.

That's what the rest of the internet thought, too. There were so many visits the settlement site crashed. Since total settlements are capped at $13 million, it will be interesting to see the final settlement value per person when March 2015 rolls around.  I'm guessing around $0.33.

If you're on the fence about claiming because you didn't think it would actually give you wings, don't sweat it. The suit is actually about falsely promising performance gains that weren't there, and if you feel wronged you can join in guilt-free.

I'm very much anti-Scouts (both girl and boy versions) and would like to see them go out of business.  However, it would be morally wrong to take even $5 under false pretenses like that.

I went for the product instead of the check.  Logic - fine print says pay-outs will decrease based on demand.  The check will assuredly not be the full $10 if demand is crashing the site.  More logic - it would be quite hard and an added expense for the company to divide a 4 pack of product.  I'm betting on a better return on the product option - a 4 pack at minimum.

BUT WAIT, put away the facepunches.

I'm going to sell these to my coworkers who are all RedBull addicts. I may or may not invest the money I earn or wipe my ass with it.  #undecided

I like free stuff!  But I've never had a Red Bull.  Damn.  Who knew that would come back to haunt me.

Never had a red bull and can honestly say I never will. Waiting for all the heart issues from a lifetime of energy drinks.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
