Saved $320 on Rx
« on: January 25, 2018, 07:12:29 AM »
A member of my household is taking a long-term maintenance medication that costs about $1/day.  I just found out that a generic version is available.  Generic version costs about $0.12/day.

Called the Dr., got it switched to generic, and also signed up for home delivery (free).  For as long as the medication is needed, we'll be saving $320/year, and we don't have to drive to the pharmacy anymore.

15 minutes of effort just saved our family ~1.5 days of living expenses per year.  I would have had to increase the 'stache by ~$7,500 to buy 1.5 days/year.  I'm not sure where this ranks on the scale of badassity, but I'm feeling pretty good about it.

I'm curious if the new med is a generic of the old one or a generic of a "formulary equivalent."  A true generic usually is substituted automatically and does not require a new prescription.  An equivalent is another drug prescribed to treat the same thing that does require a new rx.  I hope it works out and saves you money!

It turns out the original prescription was written for a premium brand that lacked an ingredient that was an allergy concern for us at the time.  When reviewing the prescription to sign up for home delivery, they alerted us to the fact that we were paying a lot more for the non-generic.  After talking with the Dr., the allergy issue is no longer a concern and so we switched to the generic.
