Finishing Nursing school debt free and ready to save! $$$
« on: April 30, 2017, 07:01:49 PM »
Hey all,

I started reading this blog several years ago, when my husband and I were trying to save money so I could attend nursing school. I started with two simple steps- ditching my car (took the bus to work) and cutting down our groceries cost, and the saving ideas snowballed from there. We were able to save 90% of my income the year before I started, which helped us get used to living off one income AND and collect a nice stash of savings for tuition. Next week I am graduating from this program, woohoo! Thanks to an amazing scholarship and our savings rate, I am graduating DEBT FREE  from a private school that normally sets you back about $90,000 as a transfer student. I am so thankful to be in this place, and can't wait to join you all in the exciting journey of saving towards financial independence. LETS DO THIS!

That's awesome! From another transfer nursing student who paid off $50k in student loans the first year out of nursing school- seriously admire the graduating without debt! Kick ass.

Hope the job search goes smoothly, you kick the NCLEX in the ass, and you're stacking lotsa cash soon!

Thanks! Excited to get the NCLEX out of the way and SO ready to have a job again. That's super cool that you paid off your loans so fast - I'm gonna have to read your journal and get inspiration from your life story. :)

I think highlights included: moving to the ghetto to a tiny house, taking my brother as a roommate, and until I got a job working in a relative's warehouse to make some cash. Ummm, joining Buy Nothing Group and taking tons of 'no spend month' challenges. (I wish this had been around at the time!: http://www.frugalwoods.com/2016/12/05/lets-take-the-uber-frugal-month-challenge-together/)
Basically, we lived as cheap as possible and threw every cent at them, and then my grandma gave me $10k to help with the loans. She said it was because she was so inspired with how hard we were working at them, but I know it was because we told people we wouldn't have kids til the higher interest rate loans were gone ;) I still have ~22k in student loans, but they're all below 4.5% and fixed rate, so we're just paying minimums.

Definitely jump into some of the journals on here, those and the challenges are what kept me on track and inspired through it all.
