My wife trimmed and colored her own hair!
« on: April 29, 2016, 08:03:32 PM »
I was so pumped about this one! As we've been transitioning away from rich suburbia style this has been a bone of contention. Here it's fairly normal for women to go once every couple of months and drop $200+ on a haircut and color, and that's considered cheap if you can believe that. And half the time she's not been happy with the result anyway.

So the other day she decided to give it a try doing it herself. I'm not a hopeless fashion illiterate male, I know women feel better if the look better and there is a difference between a half assed and nice cut/color/style. I was impressed with the job she did, and it didn't cost anything like $200.

Score one for DIY!

That's awesome!! I cut DS and DH's hair and do a pretty decent job. This year, I mustered up the bravery to groom my poodle (whose every 6 weeks style cost more than MY haircut) and did a decent job. But DD and I are still going to my stylist for $45 each (incl tip). One day I will attempt cutting my hair myself....maybe.

I find colouring myself easy. But haven't done it in years. I have a little grey but don't care enough.

I used to colour my own hair - $10 every 8 weeks, much cheaper. I don't colour it anymore though. I've cut my own hair for the last few years using a creaclip. They have a lot of videos on you tube for different styles, its easy to do and I get compliments on my hair cut, people have no idea I do it myself - takes less than 10 minutes.

Nice! My own wife recently gave herself a haircut because our baby son started grabbing things, including my wife's hair. She went into it saying that if it didn't look right, the worst that could happen was she would need to go into a professional stylist, which is what she would have done anyway.

But it all turned out fine without professional help. Hooray!

Hi, I have colored my own hair for years because of the money (100.00 ) and the two time it was done by a hair stylist I was not pleased. A lesson I learned is wash your hair then let dry, color your hair. When washing out color wet hair then add cream not shampoo, your hair will let go of extra color with out stripping new color. I rinse twice with conditioner and my hair is soft not greasy.  If you are growing out the length only do the routes (mine is shoulder length) then last 5 minutes pull color threw the rest if needed.

Awesome! I just recently started doing this as well, about 6 months ago. Cutting my hair was easier then I thought and I agree with your wife, usually I am not always pleased with end results from a hairdresser anyways. I was going about once every 3 months for cut/color only $65 here but now pay about $6 every 2 months and do everything myself. Plus I can trim my hair more often - whenever it needs it instead of waiting as long as possible.

Did she use a tutorial to cut her hair? What type of hair dye did she use? Just curious.

When my kids were small I cut their hair and DH's. When they turned 13 they started to want different styles so then I had to pay. YOu guys that can cut your own hair are awesome!  I was told that color sticks better to hair that is not newly shampooed but has went a few days without being washed.

Hi, I was also told that color would stick to hair that was not washed for a couple of days, but the color wouldn't last two weeks. Then I talked to a stylist and she said if you have grey hair it should be clean and dried. I am a blonde with grey and white hair and will never bleach my hair so I do this with clean hair and it makes a big difference. Maybe other colors are different, good luck.

I haven't gotten the nerve to cut my own hair (too many stylists have difficulty with the curls, and they are trained!) so I compromise and get it cut no more often than every 2 years. I have it cut super short, and then do it again when it is past my shoulder blades.

I started dyeing my hair in January after a nervous breakdown- I do that myself, and it costs $5 every six weeks.

Those are not man questions, haha! :D

I'll ask about that one.
