Finally got rid of cable TV
« on: October 17, 2019, 03:32:26 PM »
I've been bugging my wife for a couple of years about getting rid of cable, and now that YouTube TV and Amazon Prime have everything she watches, I finally got the ok to dump Verizon.

I tripled my Internet speed and will be saving over $2,000 per year.

I still need a landline, so I went with a pre-paid one-year plan with 1-Voip, which comes out to $9 per month, compared to Verizon's $30 per month.

Nice, $2,000 per year is a good amount of savings.

Any idea where you're going to put the money to work?

Well, my mortgage escrow was analyzed this month and my payment reduced by $40/month. My HSA contribution was going to put me over $7000 for the year, so that got reduced by $100/month for the remaining three months of the year, and now I'm saving over $190/month on cable.

I bumped up my 401(k) contributions and got our savings rate to 30% of gross pay.

Nice! There are so many options for streaming that cable makes no sense these days. Enjoy the savings and fewer commercials.

Thanks, my daughter is watching YouTube TV on her phone right now, which cracks me up, as she's on the couch in front of a 55" TV. Kids!

I have a massive television and no cable subscription. Pretty much use the TV as a giant monitor to watch movies from my PC whenever guests are over, but that's it.

I'm heading in this direction as well.  My 2 year contract with Fios expired last month.  I chatted online with them and my $145 per month triple play would go to $165 per month.  I've now purchased an amplified HD exterior antenna for $35 and mounted it on the house.  Had to buy a new universal tv remote for $20 because I couldn't find ours, having depended on the fios one.  This allowed me to scan for channels.  52 found.  Our plan is to go to internet only and try sling tv for stuff we watch like history channel.  The kicker for me is that I use the internet for work, and they pay for it.  So upgrading the speed is an easy choice (currently 50/50).  Once I make the switch, my cost will be sling plus netflix (if we keep it) and do everything off the antenna for local or through the roku for paid.

Sounds like a plan! My Fios contract had expired a while back, and they kept sending me 'special offers' that cost more than I was already paying! I'm so glad I got rid of all that ancient hardware. It annoyed me every time I looked at a cable box.

YouTube TV is a no brainer for someone who still wants live TV with that "cable" feel - guide, DVR, onDemand, etc..  Our savings are over $2,000/year, too.  For us, we were able to cancel cable at our second home and just use our package at both residences.  And really, not just the savings, but the experience is far superior to cable in almost every way.  I wish I switched way sooner.

You may want to look in to Philo TV.  It may be more your alley over Sling if you like the Viacom stuff like History.  Have you checked out Amazon Recast?  It'll give you a DVR/guide, etc for your antenna.  Tablo is another good alternative to Recast for antenna/OTA.  Since you have Roku, you may want to check out Tablo.  It's not that expensive for the device, then just $5.99/mo (or pay $150 for lifetime service) and you get a full DVR experience, can record shows, watch on your rokus, etc.  It's also nice to have your full viewing experience on the Roku between Tablo, Netflix, etc.
