Fixed my laptop hinge!
« on: August 02, 2015, 10:05:31 PM »
The hinge on my laptop was loose and if the screen went more than 15 degrees off vertical, it would tip all the way over.

Found the repair manual for my laptop, found the part number of the hinge, paid $15 including shipping, took apart my laptop and replaces the hinges!

Its so nice not having to worry about the screen falling over anymore. And its really exciting putting everything back together again and having everything working perfectly the first time.

Nothing major but reading through Early Retirement Extreme at the moment, has really got me fired up about saving money and insourcing more tasks.

omg, I need to do this! One side of my hinge broke last week, and I was going to blow a few hundred dollars on a replacement laptop!

I just did my hinge on my laptop as well. It's an X60t which has notorious hinges but somehow made it about 8 years before breaking. I was then holding up the screen with binder clips but they kept letting it slam shut so I figured I'd better spend a little money to keep the laptop going before I completely broke it by having the screen beat itself to death. $12 shipped from ebay, an hour or so of work and everything is back to normal. Hoping to get another few years out of this beast.

Also planning on adding RAM and a SSD and a fresh OS install of my SO's 2009 laptop so that will be ready for another half-decade or so of use.
