not to be weird- but Screwit, do you color your brows? Your dark brows are accenting that awesome hair perfectly.

My brows are fading/graying right along with my hair and I think that is the thing that is the most aging.

I basically saw this pictures and went "YYYYAAASSS Queen!'

(and why does MMM forum not let me embed a Broad City gif to go along with my Yas Queen? Boo!)

Seeing as I started the thread, I should probably be the first to dare bare my face here (although I may delete it later)

[MOD EDIT: Picture removed at request of poster.]

And the height and lack of frizz/fluff is due to a wax called Glynt. Need a tiny amount and it stays moldable for days. I only wash it every 4-5 days now.

It's very beautiful and suits you well.

Thank you all for the lovely compliments :)

mtn - I'm sure I don't look 40 - I'm 41 !  :D

Starbright- no the brows are all natural so far,  I use a bit of transparent gel to brush them a bit bushier (which I've found I really need to keep the whole look younger- I never used to need that) but no dye or pencils etc.  However I'm starting to find my first greys in my eyebrows to,  so I guess the look will just keep evolving!

It is interesting. I've had very short hair before but this is the first time I've dared to go for such a punky cut and it's changing so much about myself. I've always wanted my image to be more punk but felt I couldn't pull it off and stuck with the middle aged, borderline dowdy look. Now my whole wardrobe is changing.  I'm wearing short shorts and shirts although I used to always be ashamed of my legs and never showed them off.  Same with short sleeves and tanks. My jackets are shorter and more fitted and the style of everything is getting more edgy. I'm loving it! At last I am starting to look the way I always felt!

Letj: would you be able to edit your post to remove the image? I've pulled it down from my post now, so it would be great if you could take it out of your quote also. I just don't really want photos of myself hanging around here for eternity.... :)

It makes me so happy to see more women embracing their natural hair colour. My hair has been natural (grey) for years. I went through the whole colouring and then lowlights phase, and finally said "Why?" It's grey. So what? Get over it. And I did. :)

OP,

I just met a beautiful young woman in my class (I teach), from Chile, with a similar hairstyle to yours...   She looked about the same age as you, despite a 15+ year difference.   Got me thinking about cutting my own hair now...

I've looked over this thread several times, but just didn't comment because I've been doing this so long I just didn't think I'd really relate to everyone commenting. I never really got into having my hair done. I've been cutting my own hair for as long as I can remember. I've cut my kids hair for their whole lives. Even thought they are grown now they still come home for hair cuts. I embraced my grey years ago too, while I don't have too much, I do have a patch/streak right in the front on my right side. I think of it as a badge of honor or something I've earned.

@sisto I wish I had always the level of self confidence that you do! I'm happy I'm finding it eventually but I wasted far too much of my life letting others define how I should look.

I understand old habits are hard to break. Glad that you have decided not to care what others think.

Finally, somewhere I can share "badassity". I am 38 and have never covered my grey, nor plan to do so. It isn't very much right now, and the women in my family tend to go grey slowly. Mostly though, I am too frugal to spend the $$$, and too guarded with my time to be bothered to touch it up. Women in my office go every 5-8 weeks, and the ones that wait until 8? It doesn't look very good by the end! I just think it looks unnatural too. I can barely drag myself in twice a year to get my hair cut. Maybe it's time to learn how to cut it at home... besides, my DH is probably 80% grey at this point (even the kids color family pictures with daddy's hair grey, ha ha) and I don't see a need for the double standard!

Good for you! I've never colored my hair either with the exception of bleaching it white and sometimes using colored gel. I have a grey streak, but would rather have a salt n pepper look. My natural color isn't very dark either so I suppose it's as noticeable. I'm kind of looking forward for all of it to turn white, I think that would be cool.

Thought I would share the $ impact of letting my hair go grey.  I used to have to budget CND $90/month for my every 8 weeks hair cut and root cover up which cost CND $180 including tip at fancy pants salon near my house.  Stretching the appointments to every 8 weeks instead of every 6 weeks when my roots really needed it was as frugal as I could get, and I suffered through an extra two weeks of really unkempt looking hair with terrible roots.  Now I budget $8/month for a haircut every 12 weeks ($24 including tip), getting a standard stacked bob style that every ladies stylist can do so a walk in hair stylist is adequate.  No more having to book hair appointments, no more spending 1.5hr at the salon.  I could only get more frugal if I cut it myself, but don't have any desire to go that route.

Annual savings from going grey = CND $984

Very cool, it's so good to read about this. There are a few women at my workplace who have embraced their grey, and they look fabulous, very striking! The effect is more platinum-WOW than old-lady-grey.

I need to find a wig place where I can try on white/silver hair before I make my decision.  I would hope it would look striking (I have long, thick, shiny hair dyed black, my original color).  But it might look like ass.  I'd want to know before I start the long, arduous process of growing my hair out.

This is a good idea.  I stopped colouring my hair about 8 months ago and am just getting lowlights for now.  I thought that I would have a white stripe at the top of my head and that the rest would be charcoal grey.  Well, I was wrong.  There is a silvery stripe  at the top and the rest is still naturally dark brown.  So really not that big a change - especially with lowlights.

Congrats to all who have decided to let nature take it's course! To me, dyed hair looks awful on everyone -- not youthful. I suspect that it is easily sold to us at the beauty parlor. The coloring plays to our anxieties, not our strengths. There is definitely a herd aspect to the whole phenomena. BTW I don't want to have relations with any man who is dying his hair or wants me because I do.  By not doing it, you help your brain (!), your wallet and Mother Gaia. Congrats on being badass and helping to end this insanity that has crept in to our culture.

Yeah, I'm not a fan either of dyed hair. Not that I share that opinion freely with others - they can do what they want. Though even my sister, who is a successful hair dresser totally agreed with me that natural grey looks way better than seeing grey roots. If you dye it has to be touched up so often. Not worth it at all. If someone has grey hair, I think that's cool and don't think much else about it. If they have really obvious grey roots against a darker colour I find it really distracting. That's less professional or appealing IMO.

I was embracing my grey until I took my 8 year old daughter to the optometrist.   Doctor asked if I was "grandma".  I'm 44!

So I've finally done it. The dyed hair is gone, I've got a fully grey pixie cut with a bit of a Mohawk. I love it and love the colour (although some kids at my daughters daycare have already asked if I'm her grandmother. I'm 40 btw, but fully grey).

My theory is that people who grey early don't appear to age thereafter.

So you will be 40 and punk forever. :D
