Electricity usage and monthly bill down 60%+
« on: April 01, 2014, 04:55:16 AM »
Hi

I changed all the kitchen and living room lights (12 x 45Watt) to LED (12 x 4Watt) in December 2013. I just received the electricity bill for February and March (see attached image), the usage is down from 25KW/h to 4KW/h, and the monthly bill went from $285 to $109.

I paid $120 for the LED lights, so they have already paid off for themselves in two months.

I was expecting a reduction in the usage, but not that much. Very nice surprise :-)

Roberto.

Hi,

This is how it was before changing to LED lights (see attached). We are a family of 4.

That is great. I currently have all CFL in my house. Do you think it is worth switching to LED?

Thanks,

Brian

The number of bulbs and bulb power you mention doesn't equate to the numbers you are posting. You must be reducing energy use in other areas as well. 12 bulbs using 41 watts less can only save 11.8 kWh of energy per day if you run them continuously.

I hate to burst your bubble but the lights should only be saving you a max of $48 per month at your extremely high energy rates. Still a really good return on investment at almost 480% return per year.

LEDs are a bit more energy efficient but cost more up front. Its not worth substituting LEDs for the CFLs . But when a CFL blows, it would be worth putting a LED back in.

Holy macro!  That's some LED badassity!

You might want to consider sharing your story with either the electric company or the LED manufacturer so they can feature you in their commercials or newsletters.

Yeah, I hate to burst your bubble too but there is no way you saved that much in one month with just switching your lights.

Regardless of whether it's just the bulbs or not, congrats on reducing your bill! I find that electricity is something that's really hard to cut down on since we're not huge wasters of it in general, so knocking it down by 60% is a huge achievement - congratulations!
