DW real badassity!
« on: August 09, 2014, 07:30:21 AM »
So...I came home a couple of nights ago and my DW says that her lights are blinking on her 2003 Honda with just over 200,000 miles. She says that her dash is blinking, her headlights are blinking, and her battery light is blinking. So we searched the internet and it seems that the culprit may be the alternator. My DW is very supportive of our mustachian ways and knows that neither I (cop) nor she (customer service manager) know that much about cars. We have been lucky with her 2003 Honda and my 2003 Dodge pickup (85K miles).  So the following day she leaves her car parked in the garage and takes my truck to work.  This is the call I get:

Her: hey, what time you getting off?
Me: 7pm, I have a part time job.
Her: Guess I will run a few errands and take care of some stuff.

Well, on the way home at 7:15 I get a text that she needs an OFFSET 14mm wrench. LOL. So without questioning I stop by the auto store and get what she asks for.  When I get home, my DW takes the wrench and heads toward the garage. I take my gun belt and vest off and follow too interested in seeing what she is doing to take the rest of my uniform off. So I enter the garage....ok we are in Texas and right then its 92 degrees in the garage.  My DW proceeds to go to her Honda where the hood is already up and gives me the following directions after pointing out how mad she is that we don't have all the proper tools and she could have had this finished "the job" by the time I got home.  The DW tells me to hold this and hold that and says that she just needs to get enough "torque on the tensioner to get the belt off."  Ok, who are you, and where is my wife.

My DW proceeds to take out her alternator, replace it with a new one, and then test the cables with a meter to make sure they are getting enough juice because "that's what it said to do on the internet." Starts the car, and drives it around to make sure it's A O.K. Done.  New alternator installed by my DW. Comes back to apt and says that it works perfect. No lights blinking.

I sure got lucky that she picked me.

Oh, did I mention we are both chicks. I mean we didn't rebuild the engine or anything like that, but it was a giant confidence builder for us. We saved a couple hundred bucks and it took us less than an hour. My DW is still mad because she wanted to have it done by the time I got home. I still have a grin on my face.

Good for you!!

Sometimes alternator connections can also cause big problems! Always have your alternators checked at your local autozone before replacing it. My jeep had some electrical issues and my starter, battery, and alternator all tested good. When I put the alternator back on I noticed the contact points were a little dirty, cleaned them up and bam all issues gone!

You also might look for a craftsmen set of tool on craigslist or just buy a 100 dollar set at Sears! Has everything I need to do the work on my jeep.

Apparently my DW checked the connections and took the same meter, checked, and did not have any output from the alternator with the meter.  The youtube video she showed me, was very good at showing the details and checking what needed to be checked prior to replacing.

I was able to get the 14mm as part of a set with 5 other wrenches for 19 bucks..not too bad!

Not TOO bad at all.  Sometimes places like Home Depot have decent prices on tools if you look in the bargain bins or around certain holidays.  But for things like hand tools, if you're not using them as a professional (and often even if you are), if you have a Harbor Freight anywhere near, it's worth the trip.  You paid ~$3/piece; hands tools at HF  are SUPER cheap, it's not uncommon to find things like wrenches for under $1 each in sets.  Granted, no warranties or anything like Craftsman, but nonetheless, worth the $$ IMO.  (craftsman are great if you can get for cheapcheap at a garage sale or something).

Grats on the DIY car repair!  It's definitely super satisfying!

DW started something and has awoken a part of me I really am digging. Today coworker got paper stuck way down in copier. I sprang into action, grabbed drill (after unplugging machine), took out several screws and took the roller off. Was able to pull out the paper which was severely jammed. Put the screws back in and went on my way. The secretary for the chief of police thanked me with a high five. LOL

Did you know places like AutoZone have a tool lending program?  Or maybe its Advanced Auto Parts.  At any rate, you go in, they give you the tool and charge you for it.  But when you bring it back they credit it for you.  We needed tools to re-do my husbands brake lines and they gave us BRAND NEW tools and we took them back when done and got the credit.  I think there is a small fee, maybe $5 or something.  For those expensive one time use tools you know you'll never need again its a great way to do it.

Used this at Kragen autoparts before.  Many stores do this.  Kragen was like 25$ per day but if you return the tool within 24 hours, there's no charge.  Awesome way to go!

Sweet!  New skill, new tools, new confidence.  Even up here in the PNW some mechanics still talk down to women and non-gearhead folks, so any expertise in the automotive area you can develop is great to have.
