Duke Power assessment yeilded great list of projects
« on: September 06, 2018, 08:49:01 AM »
Signed up for an in-person energy audit from Duke Power in South Carolina.

They came with a box full of free goodies - low-flow faucets for sinks and showers, dozens of light bulbs, a thermal cam where we assessed insulation misses, and a thorough walkthrough of things to fix (ex taping holes in AC ducts).

I have been trying to determine where to start with my home improvements and this gave me a viable list in priority order. It was well-worth the hour walkthrough.

Nice! After reading I thought, "maybe my electricity provider does something like this." Nope, they just give a semi-helpful list of tips and tricks to reduce usage. No competition so no incentive for them.

We don’t have a competitor but they seem to be proactive, which is nice.

If it helps, my prioritization list is as follows:

1) Insulation for HVAC - some batting was missed / not replaced when I fixed a leak in attic unit. Some places could be better - including the attic folding stairs which have NO insulation! The rest is a thorough inspection of all HVAC lines and making sure there are no leaks / tears. We found a surprising amount. Also, looks like some critters chewed though insulation on my AC coolant lines, so more there.

2) Air leaks - lots of places that need spray insulation.

3) Reflection foil for the attic.

4) Foam board for the fireplace for use in the summer.

I recently installed one of the "tents" over the attic stairs in our home.  I am amazed at how much heat it blocks.

oooh.  Where do you live?   I have 2-3 rolls of reflection attic foil to put on craigslist, and you reminded me (we moved before we could install)...  I wonder what regions are actively recommending it?

@Goldielocks = We're in the Carolinas market. A bit soggy this weekend, but was near top of Duke's list!
