Dryer repair for under $1
« on: January 05, 2014, 10:42:33 AM »
Our dryer quit working a couple weeks ago (wouldn't tumble).  We looked at having it repaired but, living in the DC area, you might as well just have someone come mug you in the parking lot.  These guys charge obscene labor rates!

After looking at a couple YouTube instructional vids (google something like "repair Whirlpool dryer"), I realized it was fairly simple:  all you need is a new dryer drum belt.  The thing is 78 cents on Amazon (plus shipping).  Had it here in a couple days, took the dryer apart by removing 4 screws, and had the new belt on in a matter of minutes, referring to the old dude on YouTube on my laptop.  Saved a ton of $$$.  Badass!

Nice work.  Appliances are often fairly simple machines, aside from the newer electronic control pads that can't easily be repaired.  For some reason, many people are simply afraid to undo a few screws and see what's wrong anymore.

What really upsets me is that sometimes there's a maintenance item like a twist-out filter hidden behind a panel, and there's no mention of it in the owners manual.  I fixed this for a neighbor after discovering it behind the lower panel.  We now call it the "service call generator."   Would have cost them over $100 to have it looked at, criminal really.

Oh yeah, I forgot to charge myself $100 for the service call!  Seriously, these repair guys must just rake it in.

Congrats. I can't help but feel the same about the labor rates some people charge. $85 when they're at your place for 20 min. I know they have to earn a living but come on...

Awesome! The best part is you will be able to repair it again in the future if this issue arises, :).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
