DIY Vet Care for my Beloved Pet!
« on: April 28, 2015, 09:13:05 AM »
I am a cat lady (bordering on crazy!), and my two furbabies are very dear to my heart.  I have a vet that I trust implicitly, but it costs me $20.00 in taxi fare each way to get there.  You don't want to take a fearful, yowling cat on the bus - trust me on this one!

Long story short, my 14-year-old cat Iggy developed a hematoma on his ear, which had to be aspirated.  He received antibiotics, an injection of corticosteroids, and kitty treats to distract him.  The vet told me that Iggy's ear might need repeat aspirations, at which point I asked if I could do it myself.  The vet did a double-take, but I assured him that I was cool with it, and I received the instructions as well as a bunch of syringes and butterfly needles.

Two days later, Iggy's ear needed re-aspiration, and guess what - I was able to do it without any hassle.  So far, so good - no new blood. If things keep going well, I will return the remaining needles to the vet and get a refund!

NB:  I am an insulin-dependent diabetic, so needles don't faze me.  And in the interest of full disclosure, Iggy is a bit less Velcro-like than usual.  I think he's afraid I'll charge at him again with a butterfly needle.....

Good job! As long as your vet is on board and providing you with guidance and appropriate meds/supplies.

People would be surprised how much the vet is willing to help you do things like this at home when you are willing and able. The primary question is whether the pet will allow it... sounds like your cat has not tried to kill you, so yay!

Iggy's a big pile of goo disguised as a puddytat.  I've had other cats where the vet's first words were "Now let's clip those claws before I start!" in a fakie cheery tone.

I haven't done anything that advanced, but have taken care of various minor things rather than the vet trip. Need to learn how to deal with ticks now, since apparently that's an issue where I live.

I HATE ticks, but the trick to getting them off is to coat them in vasoline for about five minutes (which causes tick to back out to breathe) and then remove the tick with tweezers gripping as close to the head as possible.  Then make sure to clean the skin with alcohol.  Works for people or animals.

YOu can also light a match & hold it close to skin. The tick will pop it's head out & then you grab it with a tweezers.  My parents would do this when we got them & it worked.

I'm glad it worked out for Iggy, and you!

Not familiar with Montreal, sorry. But in the US, there are a number of rescue organizations in all but the smallest towns...they can often help with transport of an animal. Even in emergencies. Many of your fellow pet owners are happy to step up.

If it were me and I knew that a taxi/friend transport was the only way...I'd probably start asking around. If it's just general visits, those could probably be planned to coincide with a friend's cat visit and you could at least split the cab fare.

It's also worth having a dialogue (unless you really love your current vet) about closer vets for emergencies? "Has anyone in the xx area ever used a vet for emergencies, and who do you recommend?"

Backup plans are nice. I used to transport 45 minutes away to a 24 hour emergency hospital, only to find there's one 20 minutes away now.

Can't imagine a city that size not having some close options for you.

Do you mind sharing who your vet is? I am looking for a good vet in Montreal. Have tried a few and not been satisfied yet.
