DIY Plumbing!
« on: September 26, 2014, 06:02:21 PM »
I won't even go into detail about how bad the drainage plumbing was, BUT, my dad offered to replumb the house for us. And he has a huge hatred of going underneath houses. The husband was working today so I was under there helping, more like assisting, but hey! I wasn't going to leave my dad to do it all by himself.

Luckily most of the inlet water pipes had already been replaced. We only had to do the kitchen drain and the washing machine drain. We had to tie all that into the bathroom so it all flowed to the septic tank. Those ORIGINAL pipes were caving in on themselves.

We got everything done except the kitchen sink. I need to go out and find a particular part to connect the drain to the S-trap or whatever.

My dad paid for all the supplies, so I think it is only right to grill up some steaks soon!

Good for you.. Now I just hope the connection from your house to the septic tank is not that awful Orangeburg pipe.. because you'll be digging all the up to replace sooner or later.

Actually not that hard to do.. once you dug the trench at least..:)

We started digging that up before we realized we didn't really need to. But from what I saw, it was like, steel or cast iron pipe. Looked alright from what I saw.

Great job.  It's always nice to help (or to get help from) Dad.  The outside "Orangeburg" sewer pipe Exflyboy is referring to might be that awful tar paper crap, I've seen it a few times, crumbles and turns to mush eventually, but someone made a ton of money making/selling it.

Yes Greg that is what Orangburg is...

Zoe, the problem is it LOOKS like cast iron.. but when you tap it with the spade it does not sound like metal at all.. it just sounds like a thick paper tube would.. that's because it IS a thick paper tube..:)

Lets hope you don't have it..:)

Oh lawd! That sounds horrible. We still have a section uncovered so I will go out and tap on it and listen.

It is!.. If it goes thud thud thud.. Cover it up immediately.. Do not dig around the sides of the pipe.. the weight of the pipe will make it collapse in on itself if you do.

If your lucky it won't go under the house.. Mine did and was joined the cast iron inside the house with a large concrete block.

Imaging the fun I had digging that out!
