Title: DIY Car Maintenance
Post by: Juliekay on April 29, 2015, 08:01:15 AM
I changed my rear turn signal bulb instead of heading to firestone. Figure I saved $10- $20. I am seriously not DIY either so this is a big deal for me.

Did you watch a youtube video of how to do it?

If you didn't because you couldn't find one, you should make one and enjoy the passive income.

Yes, and have a hose spraying water around too.  (kidding)  (not really)

Seriously, that's how you learn to do stuff.  Or at least that's how I do.  Try it.  For example, when I got my first car I only knew how to check the oil.  Now I rebuild cars and do work for friends.

Good job!

One of my friends in engineering school went from not knowing how to do a single thing on his car to being the chief engineer in the school's race-car team in four years - anything is possible! Next thing you do will be a slightly bigger step and you'll get more and more confident.

Nice.

There's a bunch of stuff you can do on your car that takes only minimal tools and skills.

I've blogged about my car shenanigans lately, though not on MMM. Today was a car detailing day. Instead of paying a detailing company $300-400 to wash, clay bar, and wax my car, I spent about $200 on supplies (a foam cannon being a big one) that'll last years. Figuring, say, $1 of soap per wash, maybe another $1 if you want to add wear and tear on the tools, even going through a tunnel wash is a minimum of $10, more like $20-40 for a really good job so self-detailing pay for itself pretty quickly.

Tis!

FYI, I completed the exterior detailing today with a hand wax:

It is shocking how much of a difference a multi-step detailing makes. The metallic flakes in the paint shimmer now. I can also spot the paint chips more easily and that'll be my next job.

Oh! I was at the wrecker again and found a set of OEM, dealer-optioned rubber floor mats...for $12.43. I was just about to pull the trigger on a custom set for $100 from eBay. I'm glad I held off!
