Cut Satellite Service But Need Advice on Cellular
« on: August 25, 2014, 03:44:39 PM »
Today was a big day for the family.  We cut off the satellite service with Dish Network.  This will be a cost avoidance of 110 dollars per month.  Actually the big day was probably Saturday when I decided to get of my ass and actually try using over the air seriously.  My first few attempts were with cheap rabbit ear type antennas and I couldn't pull in the stations.  Saturday I was being lazy and was disgusted at myself so I decided to do something good for us by trying to solve the "problem" of paying too much for TV.  I was able to get all 4 major stations with more expensive/robust antenna.  Yippie!

Now I want to tackle the cell bill.  In short, I have looked at republic wireless and I like the idea of going with them but I want to see if there is a similar type of company that will let me use my existing iPhone (which can be unlocked).  It is an AT&T phone however.  I have heard of Ting which lets you use an old iPhone but it has to be  sprint phone.  Is there a company that does this for ATT phones?  If not, I will bite the bullet and go with another company but that means laying out more money for another device.  Sure I can sell the iPhone but would like to keep the iPhone experience if possible.

Thanks!

Check the stickies in the very sub-forum you posted this in, or the link in my sigline. There's plenty of alternatives to Republic that are just as cheap if not cheaper that don't require you wasting money on new, proprietary electronics with an ugly legal contract just to save some cash.

Learn what you need and how to supplement, and save some real money using the phones you already have using the guide.

I.P. has a great Wall o' text in the guide, but for an unlocked AT&T iPhone, I've enjoyed using Airvoice wireless.  I have the $10/month plan (I don't use it much as a phone, to be honest), but they also have $30 and up plans for heavier users.

Another one to check out is H2O wireless, depending on what iPhone it is you can get a cheap new sim card to put in it and the service is reasonable and offers a number of plans.

I've done the same as you, cancelled Dish and switched our phones from AT&T to Airvoice.  I'm super happy with it!

I believe Consumer Cellular could also fit your needs, particularly if you want a family plan - you can add additional lines for $10/month. Their plans are pretty cheap, no contracts, can switch plans twice a month, takes old AT&T phones because they use the AT&T network.
And if you're an AARP member, they give a 5% discount.
