Cut my toddler's hair.
« on: September 19, 2013, 12:21:23 PM »
It doesn't sound like a big deal but I was terrified of messing it up lol. I cut my husband's all the time, but I wasn't sure I would like a "high and tight" on my almost 2 year old :P I initially just cut it with scissors (after watching some YouTube videos!), but decided to take the clippers to it the next day. I did an 8 on the top and a 6 on the sides and back. It looks adorable! His very first hair cut was 1 cent at this kid's hair cutting place. But this one was free (well, minus what it cost me in electricity to run the clippers, lmao).

And I trimmed my own, and I have to cut my husband's this weekend.

Oh, I'm impressed! I want to learn... my little girl is getting some split ends but when I take her for a haircut it's expensive AND they always cut too much off.

This is definitely on my "to learn" list. Our clipper make a lot of noise, though, so I anticipate a little bit of whining from my preschooler. (who wants loud buzzing in their ears?!)

Did you do anything in particular to keep him occupied and relatively still? I'm wondering if it will help or hurt to have him be able to see what I'm doing by putting him in front of a mirror.

I've been cutting my almost 2 year old's hair for the past several months (with scissors - learned from youtube)! Each cut gets better and better. The key is candy or a snack and a video. That keeps him preoccupied.

I have a little girl with LOTS of beautiful curly hair and even just combing it out every few days is a production. I let her watch an episode of the Magic Schoolbus on Netflix and that's usually enough time to spray her hair, comb out the tangles and then I braid it or put it in twists or beads or little afro puffs.

But if I can do all that (with help from a book and YouTube), not sure why I'm so afraid of actually using scissors...

For those of you looking to learn, I highly recommend the book "How to Cut Your Child's Hair at Home." .  I got it out of the library several years ago, and it was fabulous.  I've been cutting my three kid's and my husband's hair every since.

I couldn't find that book on my library's list, but this video makes cutting toddler girls' hair look easy... I'm going to try it!

I'll have to try that - I've been cutting my son's hair since he was 6 months, and the only way I can get it all done in one go without the risk of a stabbing is to do it when he's asleep.  Thank god he's a really heavy sleeper, but there have been times when I've just had to be grateful that it's no longer hanging into his eyes, it looks that bad (to me, anyways, he doesn't care - yet).

I also put him in his high chair and we watch the video on the laptop on the table. That way he's more confined (so there's less wiggling) and he's more engrossed in the show.

That is a SOUND SLEEPER! I'm pretty amazed that you can do it at all, never mind if it's perfect!

He had it cut once at a kid's hair cutting place and she used scissors for the most part. Used clippers just a tad so he had already had some experience with them.
He sat in my husband's lap while I cut it with the clippers. When I did it with scissors I sat him on the floor and gave him a snack and turned on Batman. He still wanted to keep turning around to see what I was doing lol. So the clippers are much easier and give a better, more even cut. And then I put a tiny bit of coconut oil on my hands and give him a little mohawk :)

This is definitely on my "to learn" list. Our clipper make a lot of noise, though, so I anticipate a little bit of whining from my preschooler. (who wants loud buzzing in their ears?!)

It's also when we trim nails, clean ears, and clear his nose out - otherwise you'd think we were torturing him, the volume is so loud.  :)

That's such a great way to save money.  My boys get buzz cuts from their grandma for free!

I found something like this at a Japanese 100 yen store. It's great for trimming kid's hair (i use it for my own hair too).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
