I have a 56 mile (28 one way) commute. I thought long and hard about this when I started reading MMM 2 years ago, but our home is roughly worth $250,000 28 miles away from my work, and an equivalent home near my work would be $500,000 to $600,000. Insane. So we decided to keep our nice home, 4br, 4ba, 3,600fsf on a culdesac with a 1/2 acre lot.
To move close to my work would have meant downsizing basically to an apartment or an 80 yo small, rough shape home. DW has too much stuff to do this. And I don't think I'll ever be ready for apartment living.
On the plus side, I bought a Honda Fit and average 36 mpg overall. Love the car. And I'm retiring in 451 more days, and actually have under 300 commutes left when you factor in holidays and weekends and vacation days. I can't wait for my last commute!
I should mention that 1 year after our move to 28 miles from my work, we made a decision that DW would quit her job and her 35 mile commute, it's worked out great
