Crossed the million dollar threshold
« on: April 14, 2016, 09:54:52 AM »
Well, the recent market uptick, combined with home value increase, and continued savings and investments just pushed us over the $1 million mark.*  Doesn't feel like anything's changed, but damn, I know from the data I've seen that it's still a relatively rare accomplishment.  So I'll just celebrate with a fine craft beer tonight and look forward to the next million somewhere down the road.  MMM (and all the knowledgeable folks here who share their wisdom) rocks!

*so, we've been over the million net worth for a while now, but only because my wife's parents' house is in her name.  Subtracting that, we can now say we made it to a million on our own (to the extent that anybody in this world can say they did anything on their own).

Thanks, all. It's cool to be able to share here something I could never share with friends and family in real life!  Don't think I'll be tossing around dimes like Rockefeller reportedly did back in the day, but I have decided I need to increase my charitable contributions.  That's what millionaires are supposed to do, right?!  :-)

Love it! Are you referring to general data on net worth or do you work in a field that gives you a better look behind the curtains of how people really live?

Nice!  We're about 3 years behind you.  Mind if I ask your age?

50, close to 51.  Didn't start working until age 32 (6 years enlisted, 4 years college, 3 years law school), didn't begin paying down debt and saving until about 35.  Finding MMM about 3 years ago really helped accelerate the process. And of course, the bull market. I crossed the half million invested threshold sometime last year, but progress there as slowed since then, on account of the market being flat last year (my personal return was 1.81%). But I've been very consistent for 17 years with putting money into my 401k (been maxed out now for about 9 years). Finally, real estate.  We bought in a desirable area almost 9 years ago; it has since become a highly desirable area and values have shot up significantly.  Using the Zillow estimate, which I frankly think is low based on comps I've seen around here, our property value has increased about 30% since we bought it.

Yay! I am always happy when people make it to the millionaire's club.

Still, anymore, the achievement that makes me happiest is when someone moves to positive net worth. For some readon that milestone moves me.

Now aim high to hit $1M in investable assets (I.e, excluding house and other things).  Way to go!

Wha...??? A million dollars. Hey man you can now BUY stuff. Ya know, Luxury cars and McMansions and vacation houses and timeshares and boats and jet skies and designer clothes and posh vacations where you lay around on your butt at a spa and drink $50 infusion margaritas, get a tan, and have cabana boys (or girls) fan you with palm fronds all day.  So what are you hording all that money for? Climbing and hiking thru out the world in early retirement? Who in their right minds wants to do THAT kind of stuff when you can wear Armani suits and Italian shoes and gold jewelry while driving your Ferrari to your Country Club for a round of golf. I mean geeze dude - like get a life!

OK joking aside, that's an awesome accomplishment and you get a big congrats from me!

HAHAHAHA!!  Thanks for the laugh, spartana!  In the market for a used Subaru right now -- new Benz's are so last year!  haha!

Yep, that's the next milestone.  Currently, $806,000 of that million net worth is investment accounts.  Shouldn't be too long, barring a major market downturn (which admittedly is fairly likely soon), we should get there by 2018, I hope!

Thanks everyone!  It is pretty cathartic to be able to get it off my chest in an anonymous place populated with kindred spirits!

I cracked a nice craft IPA last night in celebration!
