Craigslist Series
« on: September 04, 2014, 03:29:07 PM »
A year ago, I purchased an olympic weight set on craigslist for 400 bucks. I used it fairly regularly for a year, getting much stronger than I was before.  I decided recently that I would rather have my dining room be an actual dining room instead of a gym, so I sold the weight set on craigslist for 400.  Then I found an awesome table, handcrafted from the 2 inch thick oak floorboards of a 100 year old barn, made by the guy that sold it to me and used for many years by his family.  It was 400.

When MMM talks about craigslist as a massive library of everything, he is spot on.  If I ever decide to sell the table, I'm sure I could get 400 for it, no problem.

Yeah, I typically make money when I resell my Craigslist stuff.  Have done it with iPads, Motorcycles, etc.  I'm getting paid to rent the stuff for a year or two, that I would have bought anyways.  Pretty sweet.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Longboards.  Half a dozen of them have gone through the Craigslist rotation so far, although I think I'm going to enjoy my current inventory for a while longer.

Yes CL is awesome.  One could make a full time living off of it.  There is a guy with a blog that just buys and sells washers and dryers and makes a full time living.

Don't forget the savings in sales tax alone !

This is inspiring. I've done very little CL selling, but the wife and I have decided to de-clutter. Though we live fairly simply (by US standards), we have much we don't use.

My only thing about CL is avoiding all of the scams. I always ask for a phone call and to meet in person, of course.

Any other simple tricks to avoid the scams as a seller?

One of the other posters pointed that out to me-- ReCraigslist.com.

Talk about your $100 startup!  This beats the heck out of my fail-safe plan to buy cheap aloha shirts at Goodwill and resell them to you Mainland suckers customers on eBay.

Yes, thats the website, thanks for digging it up.  Those vintage Hawaiian shirts are worth quite a bit.

Shucks, I'm just talking about buying them at Goodwill for $7.99 (+ a 10% discount on military Tuesday) and selling them for $20 (buyer pays shipping).
