SoFi Student Loan refinance experience
« on: January 22, 2014, 09:15:57 PM »
Hi all,

I just wanted to briefly share our student loan refi experience with SoFi. As I've mentioned before,  my SO brought more than $100k of student loan debt to our relationship at 7 5/8%, which was insane.   Unfortunately she was having a hard time refinancing.

I saw SoFi literally on the side of a bus and we gave them a try.  Your school has to be one that they support,  but  once we applied the process was easy and there weren't any gotchas.  I read the Ts&Cs pretty thoroughly and you could tell they were a younger company by some of the wording but otherwise things were fine.

We ended up getting an adjustable rate nearly half of our old rate which will accelerate payback by a few months (actually 20 or so years if you just pay the minimum,  but that'd be dumb.)  the rate has a cap that isn't much different than our old rate.

In short,  go for it!

I'm bumping this topic because I'm on the verge of refinancing with SoFi and wanted to see if others have done so and if OP is still happy with SoFi nine months into the refi.

Feedback please!  Thanks.

In the application process now currently. My personal income is too low for it to get past their preapproval, but my wife (whose loans are worse) is looking at it.

I'm not the OP, but I refinanced with SoFi about 4 months ago and so far I've been very happy. My refi brought my rate down from 7.8% to 4.3% (this is variable but so far hasn't moved- tied to LIBOR). They use TruStudent to manage your repayment of the loan. It was fairly easy to set up autopay and I get email reminders each month about my autopay transaction. They are also supported by Mint, which is nice. I haven't yet started to make extra payments on this loan, so I can't comment about how easy they make that process.

PM me if you have additional questions or are interested in my referral link- it gives both of us a $100 credit if you use it.

Thanks for the input!   I will definitely use your referral code once I'm ready to do this.

I have both consumer and SL debt from law school and have been aggressively paying down consumer debt since finding MMM in May, 2013.  In May, 2014, I submitted to SoFI for preapproval and was declined.  I kept slamming my consumer debt (reduced by about $10k since May) and reapplied about 10 days ago.  I was preapproved -- yay!

I am inclined to choose the variable, 10-year repayment scheme at 3.91% with the plan to pay it off in 5 years instead of 10.  The variable rate is capped at 8.95% and given that I'm currently paying 7.55% (highway robbery, IMHO) that seems like a risk worth taking.   It will give me a base payment of about $1580/ mo but I can add roughly another $1200 per month on top of that.

I think I will wait until perhaps December to do the formal application -- by then I'll have another $5k of consumer debt paid off and I'm hoping to get a slightly better rate from SoFi because of that.   I'll keep you posted.

I just closed my refi with SoFi.   I couldn't use a referral link but because I created my account with SoFi back in May. So, I had to use my already-existing account.

I'm going to create a thread specifically for SL refi referral links, so maybe you can post it there.  I'll post mine too and people can add theirs over time -- like the Ting referral thread.

I went with a 10-year variable at 4.16% (actually 3.91% with the .25% autopay discount.)  My minimum payment is $1581/ mo.

Note that my MORTGAGE is $1225!  Aye yi yi........

Edited for grammar.

We have spent more on SL and mortgage *interest* this year than on groceries. Sigh.
