Clotheslines
« on: May 07, 2012, 03:00:40 PM »
Some people brag about biking year round.    I line dry my clothes outside any day that it's sunny.

Today is the first day this year that I'll get 3 loads completely dried on the line in 1 day and that got me thinking about this winter picture.

This was taken january 11th it was about -5 C.  That 1 load took sun up till sun down to dry.  Each load on the line saves me about 50 cents in electricity.

Woah, those savings are amazing! Why don't you hang your clothes outside but undercover when it's wet? (Maybe I take that for granted, it doesn't snow in northern Australia)

It also saves you a substantial amount of clothing wear - most of the damage to nylon and similar fabrics happens at high heat, and it's hard on cotton too.

The more humid it is, the less effective line drying is. So you could hang your clothes under an eave or something during a rainstorm, but the air would be so humid that nothing would happen.

Exactly.  It's also why I can't dry inside most of the winter.  It makes the house way way too humid.

That's interesting. I thought the opposite would be the case. Our house gets very dry in the winter because of heating.. it seems like it would be a great way to humidify the house.

Depends on the climate.  Our winters tend to be Rainy and wet  and usually above freezing.  If you need to add humidity to your house I highly recommend hanging clothes inside.

In dry Colorado we hang indoors all year.  We just put wet clothes on the hangers in the closets and space them out about an inch each.  Dry within half a day and humidifies the house wonderfully.

You can't imagine how foreign an idea that is to me. :)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
