Cheap (deconstructed) Pizza
« on: May 27, 2017, 06:30:21 PM »
Figured out a cheap way to make a deconstructed pizza.  All ingredients bought at Walmart:

Baguette - $1; used 3/4 = $0.75
Mozzarella- $2; used 1/2 = $1
Tomato Sauce (29oz can) - $0.90; used 1/2 = $0.45
To convert to marinara sauce, added to tomato sauce (est total $0.20)
1 tbsp oregano
1 tsp basil
Pinch garlic powder
Pinch black pepper
Fresh cilantro (or parsley)

Total - $2.40, fed 2 adults and 1 child

Slice up baguette into slices of desired thickness, put mozzarella on top, put in oven until melted
Heat up tomato sauce, mix in other ingredients
Dip away!

My oldest boy has a recipe that makes the dough in a bread machine (purchased second-hand at goodwill).  I think it has made at least 400 pizzas in our household...

I thought about the same recipe using an English muffin instead but a baguette may be better tasting.
I like roasted tomato slices on mine as well.

My DH regularly makes "pizza" this way, by topping bread with tomato sauce, cheese and pepperoni. And then in the oven.

We do the same at home, but use Naan instead -- the Sam's Club brand is about $6 for a 12-pack or $0.50 per pizza. Use fresh mozz or shredded cheeses depending on what's leftover in the fridge. Same for toppings. With just the right amount of sauce (not too much or the middle will be soggy) we cook em for about 6-7 minutes at 500, yielding a little crunch in the crust and just the right amount of browning for cheese/toppings.

I often use a leftover hamburger bun, topped with leftover spaghetti sauce (with a sprinkle of Penzey's "pizza seasoning"), cheese, and toppings.  Toaster oven lunch for one.
