Car Free Update - 7 Months In
« on: June 06, 2014, 07:50:30 AM »
7 months in on this little experiment of not having a car in a city that is under 50 on walkscore.com and the largest in the country without rail options.  Fortunately, I work from home and live in a very walkable neighborhood.  Most daily needs are met on foot or bike, longer trips require bus or car2go, and an Enterprise rental car is super close.  Overall, it's going well.

Car2go cost has been $60/mo, on average, but dropping now that nicer weather allows biking to completely replace need.  Bus cost has been $10/mo, on average, I guess (I pay with change from a jar so who knows).  Car rentals have been really infrequent; think I've rented 2 or 3 times total, at ~$30 each weekend.  Taxis to/from the airport are business expenses; taxis home from a bar would've occurred regardless of car ownership.  Overall, I think the average total cost has been just under $100.  Compared to the cost when I had a serious clown car ($440/mo pay, $60/mo ins, $50/mo gas, etc), this isn't quite bad.

And as far as how much of a pain in the ass it can be... It hasn't been terrible, but I have had to borrow a friend's car a handful of times for runs to the paint and hardware store.  Somebody has had to pick me up to get me out to the burbs for a family function about once a month.

I am happy with the decision and probably have no need to update again.  Cheers.
