Allergen denaturing agent saved me a TON in carpet
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:10:45 PM »
Just wanted to share how we went about saving lots of money on carpet. We just bought a house and the previous owners had 2 cats. We are both allergic (especially my partner) and considered installing all new carpet (finished basement) because when we looked at the house my partner was already having bad allergic symptoms just after a few minutes in the basement. It was a shame because the carpet was really not that old or bad. I did a bit of research and came up with this product:

http://www.allergystore.com/xmite_antiallergen_carpet.htm

Works on mite poop, pet dander, and other allergens. It denatures the proteins in the allergens, rendering them neutral.

We treated the carpets before we moved in (it was super easy using a big clean broom) and the results were amazing. It's been almost 2 weeks and we have NO allergy symptoms. And the carpet feels clean, too. For a few days there was a faint "cleaner" smell in the basement, but nothing bad, really. In addition, I got a gallon of the ADMS spray for other surfaces (I had empty spray bottles to refill).

New carpet quote:$1500
Allergen denaturing agents + big broom + a little bit of work: $125
Savings: $1375

Woohoo!

I've used this as well, and it works great on my allergies. I can't help but wonder, though, what it is made out of, and if I could make it at home more cheaply :).

I admit I had the same thought... Great mustachian minds think alike! Not the two products I used, but I know the ADS spray active ingredient is tannic acid (hence you can't use it on light colored fabric), so maybe brewing some black tea and spraying it around? Lol! ;)

How much does it stain?  I have beige carpet.  I'm not getting cats until Mom come to visit as she is alergic.  If I can just put this down before she visits for a week, while putting the cat(s) in cat-camp for a week, it could work for both of us.  I really want to get some cats again.

We have light beige carpet too. The X-mite carpet powder stuff doesn't stain at all! The ADS spray is the stuff that can discolor light colored surfaces, but you can get the ADMS stuff and that works (the denaturing quality just doesn't last quite as long as the ADS, different active ingredient).

EDIT to add a tip: if you use the powder, vacuum really well first, then use a clean, wide outdoor broom to spread the powder and work it into the carpet. It's really a breeze!
