Can a Prius be Badass?!?!?!
« on: October 25, 2014, 05:41:44 PM »
I suggest that it can! Finally a place where a Prius can be Badass! My wife and I have tent camped across the USA for the last two summers. (We both have summers off since we work for a school system.) I found this site last February and have not looked back since. We added a hitch and a cargo rack to our 2008 Prius and averaged 45mpg (Over 7,300 miles.) while carrying my wife and I, our dog and more crap than we should have had the right to take. The car did great and now has 115,000 miles on it and is going strong. Planning our next trip for the north east and Canada. Here is my blog if you are interested. http://2milesand4feetfromhome.blogspot.com/2014_06_21_archive.html

When I open the hatchback to show friends that a Prius has cargo space, their reaction is usually "Oh, wow, it didn't look that big from the outside."

Just needs rallye stripes, hood scoop, and a carbon fiber wing.

Ha Ha I will have to look into that. At the end of our camping trip we went to the Philippines where the most badass vehicles live. For two weeks we rode around on trikes that usually have a 125cc or less motorcycle powering them and can carry a family of 12 with no problems. They can also move furniture and Karaoke machines. You could catch a ride anywhere in town for about 50 cents U.S.

Yeah OP, your Prius is cool.  So is mine.
Question re the cargo rack: does it weigh the car down at the back? I find there is not much clearance with the Prius. And I see you are on dirt roads. Any problem bottoming out?

Anyone had any experience with raising the suspension?

I've gotten mine up "high clearance only" dirt roads, albeit with some careful manuvering around holes, a couple of mild bottoming outs, and occasionally making my friends get out and push on the steep parts.  It's awesome parking it at trailheads next to a line of 4wd pickups!

If I got to a point where I was considering raising the suspension though, I'd probably just buy an actual high clearance vehicle.  I find my prius gets me 95% of the places I want to go, and as for the other places, I have plenty of friends with trucks

I never had any problems bottoming out but the dirt roads we were on were pretty tame. In that picture we were in the Badlands. I think we went over 20 miles on dirt roads there. When I bought the hitch they did sell some kits to raise it a few inches. I loved the rack in the back. I just had to constantly remind myself it was there when I was backing up.

REally? I can't get mine down my drive over the tree roots, nor park across the road on the rough.
