Bought First Freezer Paper
« on: August 28, 2013, 07:55:05 AM »
I recently started buying meat in the family/value packs.  The thing is I'm single and a 4 pound package of meat lasts at least a full week.  I had been using the larger size ziploc freezer bags, but they cost at least $.10 a piece while wasting the plastic, and I don't like reusing meat bags (just seems unsanitary).
So I bought a roll of freezer paper during my grocery run, 75 yards for $3.  I'll see how long it lasts but I rolled up my first package of meat last night.

Any other suggestions on storing meat in a freezer?

I use a vacuum sealer, but I do wash and reuse the heavy bags. I buy it in rolls, and cut them long (every seal uses up about an inch). I individually freeze things (burger patties, chicken pieces, pork chops) and once they're well frozen, neatly bag, seal, and store in the deep freeze. I can pull out what I need for a meal and reseal the rest.

It's not perfect; sometimes the bag will get a pinhole and lose vacuum, or things will stick together, but it really keeps freezer burn away.

You're a meat bag.  Seriously though you could wash the freezer bags.  Not sure if they are more effective.  If they are you could combine- paper wrap then place in freezer bag.  Then reuse freezer bags as needed.

Our butcher wraps our meat in cling wrap first, then butcher paper.  I haven't had any problems with freezer burn.
