Cold french press coffee, no need for a coffee maker!
« on: November 21, 2013, 09:55:12 AM »
During summer months, a cheaper way to make coffee is to put your coffee grounds in the french press (leave the press part out for now), then leave it in the refridgerator over night.  In the morning, put the press in, and press the coffee.  This makes some great low acid iced coffee!  No need to waste electricity using Mr. Coffee!

Word. Cold brewed french press coffee is the real stuff. Here are some ideas for variations and a way to make a ton at once (you can also put a real pitcher full of coffee and grounds in the fridge, then press it as you drink each cup).

I do this, but it does not save me money: the amount of coffee I use for cold pressing is larger than the amount I use for hot pressing, for coffee of similar strength.

I've used nearly every coffee contraption on the planet over the last 20 years. I have gradually moved away from cost and complexity. Leave that to the coffee shops. Some days I just microwave a cup of water and whack in a couple spoons of freeze dried or a packet of Korean instant coffee with milk. The caffeine addicted parts of my brain don't know the difference.

Plus, french press can make far superior coffee to a drip machine. (In Australia percolators are rather rare, and believe it or not there is quite a strong cafe culture in some parts, despite our love affair with tea). With quality freshly-ground coffee you can get a crema from a french press (or a bialetti, for that matter). If I were to spend money I'd buy a grinder in preferance for a drip machine.
