badassity at Target
« on: October 30, 2014, 02:52:49 PM »
I'm expecting in a few weeks, and have a baby registry at Target.  Earlier this month, they sent me a bunch of coupons for 15% off anything still left on the registry.  SO, I took advantage of that, and added things that I wanted for the hospital and postpartum - a robe and slippers, nursing bras, even chapstick.  Et cetera.  I went today and bought quite a few things I'd been wanting, and got a nice discount.  And I have more of the coupons, so I can do it again (there were a couple of things I couldn't find).

That's not the badass part, though.  I mean, it was cool to find a way to save on stuff I was going to buy anyway.  BUT, while I was there, I found a $56 nursing bra, on clearance because it was an online-only item that someone had returned to the store.  Not just any clearance.  It was marked down to $0.46.  Yup, forty-six cents.  99.99% off.  It's not even close to my size, but I bought it and plan to sell it on eBay.  Even if I only get $10 or $20 for it, it's pretty much pure profit.

I've found a few other things at Target that were online-only store returns, marked down ridiculously low.  I got one of our crib sheets, and a baby dress, for less than $2 each.

So when you're at Target, check the endcaps!  That's where these things always are, at least in my experience.

ETA:  The same bra is selling on eBay for ~$30.  I started the auction at $20, with a buy it now option for $35.

ETA2:  Old Navy is another great place for this kind of discount - the one in my area automatically marks down online-only returns by 50% to start.

Nice job!  I love me some Target clearance, but I've never found any deals *that* good.

Back in my clothes-buying days, I did pretty well at Ann Taylor a few times when I found online-only items on the clearance rack.  Typically a discount of 90% or more.

Way to work the system!

Funny story about online only: When my niece was born, her parents got more size 1 diapers than they could use, so they took back a box of 100 to the store and got $20. Then they found out I was knocked up again and decided to buy them back as a present for me. Apparently that particular size and brand were online only... so they were able to buy back their own return for half price!

I've found the less I visit Target and Kohl's (two of my former haunts) the healthier my bottom line. I bought a lot of crap over the years because it was "cheap" or clearances out, and I thought 'this will make a good gift for someone someday'.

In the end, I ended up giving family and friends cheap gifts they probably re-gifted to someone else. Now, I avoid the clearance and my compulsion to stock-pile gifts. I give family and friends cash these days.

Good points.  I only buy things if I have a specific person and event in mind, though, and I really don't do it more than a few times a year.  No stockpiling here!  For instance, my grandma writes a ton of letters, so I keep an eye out for sales on stationery.  I was at TJ Maxx today, looking for a jacket, and found a 3-pack of colored hair gel, which my son loves, for $4.  That'll go in his Christmas stocking.

Other than immediate family, I only have my niece & nephew to buy for, plus my grandma because she's awesome.  Siblings get gift cards.  I get something for my parents, too, but they always have specific things they want, so I just do that.

I'd love to skip the gifts entirely, except for kids, but my parents won't let that happen.  As long as they insist on buying me something, I feel obligated to get something for them, too.  It's dumb, but it is what it is.  I've tried to tell my mom that I really really really don't want anything, but when I do that, she gives me a gift card to someplace I never shop (it was JC Penney for my birthday).  If I request something specific, I'll usually get the cheap version of it, which I end up returning, or something else entirely - Christmas 2011, I got long underwear.  Seriously.  WTF.  This year, I asked for a specific model of bike trainer for indoor winter riding, or else a gift card to one of three places.  I'll probably get a cheap crappy trainer and return it, the put the money towards the one I want.  I know what their spending limit is, and I always make sure what I ask for is within it, but she'll go cheap so she can give me a few small things as well (things I don't want or need).

TL;DR - gifts are a pain in the ass.

frugalparagon - That's awesome!  I have a couple of packs of newborn size diapers that I really doubt I'll use, but I don't have a receipt so I can't return them.  They'll go to the next friend/family member to get pregnant, I guess.

purplepants - Hmmm, I might have to check out Ann Taylor.  Thanks for the heads up.  :)

It sold for $20.  Minus the paypal fee, shipping, and the original 46 cents, I made about 15 bucks.  Not too bad for almost no work.  :)
