Anyone sell their miles or reward points
« on: April 24, 2018, 01:45:58 PM »
I know some brokers pay 1 cent to 1.8 cents per point for some miles and points programs, but I have never done it myself. Curious if anyone has tried this. I know rewards programs do not like this and I am wondering if any of them ever ban you or things like that.  I saw it mentioned in this blog https://passiveincomemd.com/student-loan-hack-for-high-income-professionals/ that was featured on POF's Sunday best

Hopefully this becomes like the tradeline thread and we have a new lucrative avenue at MMM

I did once - I forget who I used, but it was very easy.

I've done it many times. My main broker is sellmymilesnow.com. it's become a very lucrative side hustle

What airlines or programs? I have read that some places, namely American Airlines are very aggressive in shutting down accounts for this.

What kind of rates are people getting for their miles? I have ~200,000 American miles burning a hole in my wallet, and plenty of others too.

As mentioned above aa are risky. You may just lose them all. I have no idea of current rates on those. What other miles do you have?

At a minimum, I also have ~48,000 Avianca Lifemiles, ~40,000 Starpoints, ~65,000 Amex MR points, and ~40,000 Alaska miles.  Others in smaller quantities and probably some that I'm forgetting.  I have a plan for some of them, but plenty were just done for churning giggles with no real plan.

I'd like to get rid of about 40k Alaska miles. Also have about 60k amex mr points I would sell for a decent price, otherwise I'll just redeem them myself.

I've never dealt with lifemiles but I think they sell well. Spg should get approximately 1.8 cents per point. Their value will likely rise in August so I would wait to sell (or take advantage of a transfer bonus to make them worth more). Amex should get 1.35 or so. Not sure about Alaska but if you churned and then closed those cards those are harder to sell. I usually sell in larger quantities than that which affects value so my numbers may be a bit off.

In general you'll always get better value redeeming for personal travel

Hmm, thanks for the info.  I'll have to consider this.

I just saw lifemiles quoted at 1.45 so that should give you a benchmark. Going rate is probably actually slightly below that

I think two big things for the thread to determine are 1) What accounts are easiest to sell. I.e. how many times have you sold Amex miles (without a reprimand) 2) what is the delta between cost you get from selling vs the realized benefit for personal travel.  I know generally most brokers and sites want to buy > 100,000 miles at a time.

Amex, spg, JetBlue are definitely the easiest to sell. Chase, Alaska, much harder and aa even harder than that.

Is there a minimum number of miles they require? I know I looked into selling around 30,000 Lufthansa miles once and they needed a minimum of 50,000.

What would be really nice is a way to sell off reward point dust / crumbs.  I have a smattering of points that from 100 or less to 3-4,000 in various programs that will likely just collect dust and never be used due to minimum requirements, etc.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
