Opening Vanguard Accounts
« on: March 21, 2014, 04:37:48 AM »
Last night I helped 2 of my friends open Vanguard Accounts & start funding Roth IRA's both in their early 20's. While neither are interested (yet) in retiring early, both understood from various things I've posted on Facebook that saving right now is more important than saving more later if they want to have money when they reach standard retirement ages. They both told me that they wished someone had taught them in High School how to balance a checking account, not to get student loan debt & how compounding interest really worked.

Somewhat related, my wife has had a bitch of a time transferring an IRA from Merrill-Lynch to Vanguard (at my insistence, she was getting killed with fees in the M-L account).  She's found the Vanguard people particularly unhelpful and is questioning my rationale for insisting she make the move!  I hope it gets straightened out soon.

I know where my son goes to HS they are teaching that stuff now. I think more and more schools are starting to Implement.

That's cool you're helping them out.  Getting started is the hardest part.

I started a blog recently to help out young people with their money.  There are few resources doing that.  Perhaps if given the resources, young people won't get into debt in the first place and then won't have to do the whole 'digging out of a debt-hole' dance so many do.

That's awesome! Even if they don't fully understand yet what they are doing and why, they will have a much better start thanks to you!

Weird, I've been rolling a bunch of old 401(k) plans into Vanguard and the people I dealt with at Vanguard were really nice, even called the other companies for me (with me on conference call) to help walk me through getting everything I needed. The companies I was taking money out of, however, were less helpful but I guess that makes sense since they were losing my business anyway, less need to be nice. What number has your wife been using? If it helps and is different from what she's used, Concierge Services gave me their direct number 800-841-7999. I talked to 2 different reps on different days, and both were really nice. Good luck!

I am in the process of rolling a small IRA from NFCU into VG.  As of last night, the money has disappeared from NFCU but not shown up in VG.  I expect this will take another day or two.  All in all, other than taking about a month, it's been a very easy process.  Both NFCU and VG were very helpful in getting the money from one place to the other.

I've been very pleased with Vanguard's service every time I have called and will recommend them to anyone needing a simple, low fee investment account.

I just started a transfer to Vanguard and also had an excellent experience dealing with their Concierge Services (who handle transfers) - pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient.

I've been bugging my husband to switch his IRA to Vanguard for months and he finally did it last week. It took about 30-40 minutes on the phone, but the rep was very helpful. I was actually the unhelpful one because my husband kept asking the rep questions and I tried to answer them, so he had me talking into one ear and the rep into the other. :)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
