Adventures in a free wood burning hot tub
« on: October 29, 2017, 06:58:38 AM »
Two summers ago I was gushing to an acquaintance of mine about how much I would love to get my hands on a wood burning hot tub. “I’d love to live the pace of life where an item like that really makes sense.” To which he replied, “Really? You can have mine! We never use it. Just grab it out of my yard!”

So I rounded up a couple friends, drove two hours from the town we had just moved to, and did just that! I was thrilled because his tub was a Snorkel Cedar tub, exactly the thing I had been looking for.

Unfortunately it was soon discovered that there was a reason that this tub was free...

There was only about a quarter inch of solid wood left. This was either going to take more work and money than I had expected or I had just drove two hours for some campfire wood and a warped aluminum fire box.

The tub sat behind my mom’s garage for the next year while I continued building my house. In the end, I decided to just throw a little time and money at the thing to see if I could limp it along for a year or two.

One of the friends that helped me haul it suggested using Flex Seal to rubberized the interior (the tub was woefully dried out and full of gaping cracks). So a couple hundred dollars later (two large and one small can of the stuff) the tub holds water!

The maiden voyage was last night. We cooked ourselves right out of the thing! :) All in all, I’m very pleased. It was, however, discovered last night that the location we chose for it is right in the path of a street light. Thankfully these things are relatively mobile. Looking forward to many more warm soaks!

Conceptually, I understand a wood burning stove surrounded by water gets hot.

But, like, where do you actually put the wood in?  You can't open an underwater door to feed it...

I am doing a wood-fired hot tub project right now.
I have a cast iron bath tub, takes 3 men to lift it. Going to set it on blocks, create a fire pit underneath, caveman style.
The water will be heated and piped into an IBC container (plastic with a steel cage), with top sliced off.
I will monitor temperature and stir with a boat paddle. Its beside a river and a wood I own.
It will be me and the german shepherd.

That looks awesome maxforce! Are you planning on doing anything to help keep a more consistent water temperature?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
