A New 1% - Badassity Style
« on: February 24, 2014, 11:38:51 AM »
I'm taking baby steps to restore my Mustachian ways and am now thinking about the "1%"
Three easy changes:

  1. I used my rubber scraper to scrape my "empty" quart of yogurt, and weighed it.  It was 3% (27g/900g) of the container!!!

  2. Same with my honey.  I poured hot tea into an "empty" honey container and sweetened my tea for a week.

  3. Lastly, I'm saving strawberry caps and freezing them to be included in future chocolate/strawberry/orange smoothies!

Looking forward to cutting my grocery bill in half one day soon.  That will be the 50x1% :)

That's brilliant!  How to get to the last of the honey has always puzzled me.

Great baby steps - I'm right there with you in racking up the small changes.  Welcome!

Yes, it's loaded with chlorophyll which is supposed to be very good for you.  If you put it in a power blender (I have a BlendTec) then it will be tiny by the time the smoothy is done being blended.

Another "1%" that I always do, and I'm sure a lot of other people do:

Toothpaste. Just when you think you can't get any more out of there, use the toothbrush handle to smooth it out. Lasts another week at the least.

Painter's trick: cut the tube open from the bottom, squeeze and use whatever's in there!
Never done that with toothpaste, but it's the same idea.

Edit to correct formatting.

I use the edge of the sink counter and it works quite well.  Same principle.

Once you are done with your laundry detergent, put water in it and swish it around really well, I can get 1-4 more loads out of it. And you are rinsing so it's ready to be recycled too.

Same with shampoo or conditioner

You can put ice cream in a "empty" Nutella jar and get the last bits of goodness :)

Jam jar is empty, put some balsamic vinegar in it swish it around real good and you have yummy flavored balsamic for salad dressings

Crushed up potato chips are great for a crust for your breaded chicken, or use in a taco salad for the crunch, or put in soup like you would crackers.

Not everyone can do this, but we don't throw away any leftovers, our chickens and rabbits and worms are happy to eat every last scrap :)

For cosmetic items that come in tubes, I cut them in half when I can no longer get any more product out. I can cut open a 1-oz. tube of eye cream, put it in a seal container, and usually get another 15-20 uses out of it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
