Dyeing faded clothes!
« on: July 18, 2014, 08:57:11 AM »
Mr Pol has had that Levis denim shirt for a long time. It was originally black, but over the years has faded to a dull gray. He’s very attached to it, and thought Levis was still selling them. Alas no!

Apart from the fading issue, the shirt is still in good shape. So I thought I’d try to dye it back to black.

I used some Dylon black dye for the washing machine, followed scrupulously the instructions, and lo and behold, the shirt has just come out of the machine utterly black and looking brand new!

This an easy way to bring some life back into older clothes but still in good shape.

I've heard good things about Dylon for clothing.  Has anyone tried it on jeans?  My jeans tend to fade from "dressy" to "casual" to "working in the garden" pretty quickly.

The shirt in question is in a fabric similar to jeans fabric, so I assume you would get a good result.

From Dylon website:
Q. Can I dye denim?
A. Yes, Machine Fabric Dye or Wash & Dye are best for dyeing denim however you will loose the light dark contrast typically associated with denim.

Anybody have any tips/tricks for achieving this badassity when one is without an in-home washer? I have a small pile of clothes that could really use being re-dyed, but we don't have a washing machine in our apartment.

Dylon also have dyes for hand use:

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
