5 yards of mulch
« on: April 11, 2016, 08:41:37 PM »
I just spread 5 yards of mulch by hand.  Saved a couple hundred bucks by doing it myself!

Yep, not a big deal with a wheelbarrow, scoop shovel and a rake.
We do it every year after planting flowers, etc.

Not trying to outdo OP, but I've done 10-15 yards of mulch on my own.
My neighbors always look at me like I lost my mind doing all by myself.
Takes me about 2 days 4 hours each to spread and rake it.
I get to keep $300-450 in my pocket.

Great job!  15 yards is no small accomplishment!

I do not have any experience in carpentry, electricity, plumbing, etc... but landscaping is something I can do.  In this sterilized world it is highly satisfying to dig one's hands into a giant pile of mulch.

People pay big bucks to spread mulch?? Not in my world. I'm old, though, and willing to hire the high school/college age kids of my friends to spread mulch or mow lawns, but that's partly in the nature of being a nice friend.

My wife and I get our mulch for free from a big pile at the landfill (it's really everybody else's half-composted yard waste) so we measure by the compact-pickup-truck load rather than by the yard. We've only done at most two truckloads at a time, but considering that we're shoveling all of it twice -- loading it into the truck and then unloading it again -- that's kind of a lot.

I go to our local waste recycling plant that recycles yard wastes and turns it into mulch/compost.  I drive my truck out there and ask for a 1/2 yard....They give the same amount whether you ask for a 1/2 yard or a full.....  $3.50 later I'm home spreading a yard of compost.  Takes about 3 hours total.

The next weekend, I do it again--another $3.50 and another 3 hours spreading and I'm done!
