10000km by bicycle
« on: September 20, 2016, 09:58:16 PM »
Today my bike computer ticked over 10000 km.   It’s a nice psychological milestone I’ve been looking forward to.

Here are some more numbers:

It took a little over four years.
Roughly 95% of the distance was commuting.
Roughly 70% of the distance 1+ children were also being transported (in trailer, weehoo, or child seat).
Using the ATO reimbursement levels (66 cents per kilometre), that’s $6600.
Using only the fuel saved and my car’s worst measured fuel efficiency (~12.5 L/100 km), and an average petrol price of $1.20/l, that’s about $1500.
Not needing to purchase parking permits at my workplace over the 4 years saved about $3000.

I estimate the total cost of bikes, including two bikes, trailer, various accessories, and all maintenance, is around $2900.  Sounds like a lot, but less than just parking permits would have been.  Plus I didn’t have to spend all that time in the car!

That's seriously badass! You went ahead and did it while the rest of us (specifically me) sat on the sidelines waiting and wanting to do it.

That is awesome!
When I commuted by bicycle it was always the best part of my day (even in the snow and rain).
There is nothing like exercise out in the elements every day...really boosts the mood.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
