(22M) Mended my own pants today
« on: October 25, 2015, 12:54:59 PM »
This may not seem like much to most, but I'm really happy with the fact that I was able to mend my own pants this morning. They are a pair of brown khakis that retail about $75. Super comfortable and definitely one of my favorite pairs of pants. I was dreading having to purchase a new pair and now I don't have to!

Good job.  I've saved tons of money by mending.  Keep up the good work!

I am very good at mending holes in sweaters so that they are invisible. When I worked in an office, word got around, and my female coworkers would stop by for a chat while I mended their sweaters. I made a lot of friends, had no problem getting help with work, and was the first to learn all the office gossip.

That is so awesome! These pants weren't the cleanest stitch, but my sister tells me it's better than her first mend. It's also the crotch, so it'll hopefully not be too noticeable!

Well look at YOU Mr. fancy-pants...

But seriously, way to go. I mended my first pair of jeans this year, too. Felt great learning a new skill, preserving some nice clothes, and saving a bit of money to boot!

Mending (instead of buying new) is SUCH a money-saver... especially for those with kids, because buying a new pair of pants every time my toddler rips a hole in the knees of her leggings would be silly.

Also a huge money-saver: learning to hem and do basic adjustments to your clothing. I had 2 dresses that needed to be hemmed (jersey, no lining - the dresses cost less than 20$ each). The seamstress was quoting me 16$ per dress, which is LUDICROUS. I googled some 'how to hem jersey material without a serger' blog posts and got to work. A half hour and two spools of cotton thread later, I had spent 3$ and hemmed both dresses and saved 29$, while learning a new skill. (and if you already have the thread, you've averaging 60$ per hour savings on sewing... that's pretty phenomenal, when you think about it.)

Nice work! I love mending! For clothes I wear outside of work, I prefer visible mending. I get big holes in my jeans from riding my bike, so I started mending using the sashiko method. I add cloth to the inside of the pants, but if you overlaid the patch cloth, it would probably look better (I don't care about that sort of thing). Sashiko is the easiest and most long lasting method I've tried.

Keep it up!

Sounds like this was meant for the Mustachian and Single area of the forum.

How does this work? Is it darning or something else?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
