"Teaching" gig!
« on: July 01, 2020, 04:45:30 PM »
A running friend of mine's wife reached out to me on Messenger yesterday. She mentioned that she manages the corporate and community education department at our local community college. She asked if I would be interested in teaching a workshop about the various trail systems in our area, since people are spending more time outdoors these days. I responded that I am definitely interested and she will be back in touch when they get their schedule put together! She even said that if I had any other topics I would like to teach, they would be open to those as well. We haven't discussed pay yet - I'm sure it wouldn't be much - but it was nice to get the opportunity. Who knows, I could parlay that into an adjunct professorship, which would be a kickass side gig when I pull the trigger in ER in a few years!

Very cool. I teach 1-2 courses a semester at my local CC, and next year my wife and kids can take classes for free.

What would be awesome is if you not only get paid while adding money to a 403(b), but if you'll also be in the pension system. For me, this is actually my 3rd pension (see here for info on pension stacking: https://oldpodcast.com/defined-benefit-pension-hacking/)

I also teach adjunct at a local CC. It is a little stressful on top of my full time gig but great side gig and will hopefully be an awesome early retirement gig as well. Teaching one to two nights per week and making $500-1,000 per month in income plus a 10% matching contribution to a 403b. If you can pull in $1,000 per month doing something fun it lowers your FI number by 300,000. Pretty sweet. Enjoy the workshop.

I have been teaching a online college class since retiring 8 years ago. It’s fun and enjoyable.

This! I just accepted an adjunct lecturer position in addition to my full-time job. It's great to have a side hustle I don't have to build on my own, and I get access to the college I teach at's resources as well as having flexible work on my own terms when I FIRE (recreational employed)...maybe I could even get health insurance paid?

If you have a hobby that you can share with people you can teach general interest classes at your local community college/university.

If you have a Master's or a Bachelor's in an in-demand field you can teach a class...plus with everyone not able to meet in person, you can teach remotely!

Best wishes,
N

You usually need a master’s degree to teach.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
