1998 Sienna Minivan vs New SUV for my family
« on: April 15, 2017, 07:07:22 AM »
Needed a bigger vehicle for the growing family. We had been looking at slightly used SUVs in the $20k range, because it seemed like the thing to do. But, a friend was getting rid of this 1998 Toyota Sienna. It's got 100k miles and is worth about $2,000, AND ITS AWESOME. Super cheap to insure and almost no depreciation makes gas almost the only expense of having this vehicle. Once you accept being Mr. Dad and cruising around in a minivan, life gets easier.
This is the big lesson I learned: I am just as happy using this $2,000 old minivan as I would have been with a $20,000 SUV. Happier, in fact, because the minivan has DUAL SLIDING DOORS. Bam.

Also badass is whoever the previous owners were, who only drove that rig about 5k miles per year!

I thought this thread would be asking for advice but it looks like you've already made your (very MMM) decision.  Congrats!

Just make sure that timing belt is in good shape, 100k is when they need to be replaced.  It's a relatively big job for the non-mechanically inclined.

Parts aren't too bad, about $200 for everything.

You need to isolate the amount of money you will be out for the newer car, if the enjoyment of the newer one is worth the money; buy it; if not do not. Mine is 10 years old and have looked at ones 5 years old but the cost is not enough for me to upgrade.

Quit calling them a minivan. Call it a people mover... ;)

I'm old enough that I generally give a flying flip what anyone thinks of my daily driver.
